earlier.

The neighborhood’s planning changes had increased demand.

I stared at the number.

Once, that number would have terrified me.

It would have explained everyone’s behavior.

Now it was merely information.

“What are you thinking?” Emily asked.

“That Walter bought this place for less than the price of a parking space.”

She laughed.

Then I told her.

“If I ever leave, I don't want you selling under pressure either.”

“I won't.”

“I want you to decide what the property means for your life.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

“Not mine.”

Another nod.

Walter’s letter had done its work.

The house was safe.

Now safety had to stop becoming obligation.

That night I carried the black suitcase into my bedroom.

Opened it on the bed.

Not packing.

Just looking.

The interior lining still had a small stain from our coastal trip.

Sand remained in one corner.

I brushed it out.

Months earlier Greg and Dana packed this suitcase because they had decided where I belonged.

Now it waited empty.

I could fill it.

Or not.

Stay.

Or leave.

Travel.

Return.

Choice did not require motion.

Only ownership of the decision.

I closed the suitcase and put it back in the closet.

Not yet.

The next morning, I walked into Walter’s workshop.

Sunlight crossed the repaired wall.

The preserved burned board remained darker than everything around it.

I touched it.

“I'm thinking about leaving someday.”

Saying it aloud felt ridiculous.

Walter was not there.

That was the point.

I did not need permission from the dead either.

Then I laughed.

“Not today.”

I went inside and made coffee.

My house.

Emily’s deed.

My home.

For now.

And for the first time since the suitcase appeared by the door, “for now” felt not like a threat, but like freedom.

Click here to continue reading: PART 34: Ruth Sold Her House by Choice, Emily Planned a Future Beyond
