opened.

“I never fell,” I said from the observation room, though Dana could not hear me.

Emily touched my arm.

Daniel asked, “Did Eleanor fall?”

“No.”

“Then why say it?”

“Chuck said it would establish risk.”

A simple lie.

A small lie.

Enough small details.

“Why not?” Daniel asked.

“Greg said she'd interfere.”

Potential obstacle.

The family profile had entered their stood.

I did not.

The answer hurt.

Not because it was new.

Because ambiguity disappeared.

Greg had sometimes behaved as though he convinced himself my health was declining.

Dana said otherwise.

He knew the evidence was being manufactured.

At least some of it.

Daniel asked for specifics.

Dana described an evening in my kitchen after I went upstairs.

Chuck told Greg they needed two or three documented incidents.

Greg asked whether minor things were enough.

Chuck said yes.

Dana suggested claiming I had left the stove on.

Greg rejected that.

Not because it was wrong.

Because I cooked too carefully and the lie might be challenged.

He suggested missed medication instead.

I stared at the screen.

My son had helped choose which lie about me would sound believable.

Emily looked furious.

“He never told us that.”

“No.”

Walter’s letter returned.

Tell the truth even when the truth costs something.

Greg had surrendered many truths.

Not all.

That mattered.

The interview ended after two hours.

Dana agreed to cooperate fully.

Her attorney negotiated immunity on certain document-possession issues, not broader conduct.

I did not care about the legal terminology.

I cared that she had finally spoken plainly.

Outside, Greg waited in another room.

Daniel asked whether I wanted to speak to him.

“Yes.”

Emily said, “Grandma.”

“I need to.”

We entered.

Greg looked from my face to Emily’s.

He knew.

“Dana talked.”

“Yes.”

His shoulders lowered.

“What did she say?”

“You tell me.”

He closed his eyes.

I waited.

Silence.

Then:

“I knew.”

Emily’s voice became ashamed.”

Emily laughed.

“No. You told us things that made you look ashamed already.”

Greg flinched.

She continued.

“You kept the detail that made it look planned.”

He stared at the table.

She was right.

There was a difference between desperation and design.

Greg had admitted desperation.

He had not fully admitted design.

I sat opposite him.

“What lie did you suggest?”

He swallowed.

“Medication.”

“Why?”

“Because it seemed plausible.”

The phrase hurt more than shouting.

My own habits had become raw material.

“You watched me every morning.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I took it.”

“Yes.”

“And still.”

“Yes.”

I took a breath.

“What else?”

“Appointments.”

“I didn't forget laughed.

“My knee hurts.”

“I made it sound dangerous.”

“Why?”

“Because Chuck said safety arguments worked better than money arguments.”

The system spoke through him.

Greg finally looked at me.

“I thought if I admitted everything I planned, you'd never speak to me again.”

I answered quietly.

“You're still controlling information based on the reaction you want.”

He looked
