We&#39;re working on names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know where Margaret was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says Margaret was taken to the lodge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproved twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeams are already moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one breathed normally after that.<\/p>\n<p>At eleven forty, Daniel called again.<\/p>\n<p>They found the lodge.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Still warm.<\/p>\n<p>Food on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Medication bottles.<\/p>\n<p>One belonged to Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>But Margaret was gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer belongings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat note?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears to be in her handwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read it.<\/p>\n<p>They keep moving me because I talked. Victor says I am confused. I am not confused.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Eleanor gets this, tell her the red book was never at Cedar Lake.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said, \u201cShe wrote one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read it.<\/p>\n<p>Walter would understand hiding something where everyone can see it.<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Greg whispered, \u201cWhy would she mention Grandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn&#39;t know Walter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the wording.<\/p>\n<p>Not Walter the person.<\/p>\n<p>Walter would understand.<\/p>\n<p>A craftsman.<\/p>\n<p>A hiding place.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere visible.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Victor&#39;s father&#39;s cabin.<\/p>\n<p>His lodge.<\/p>\n<p>Properties.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps Margaret had heard me talk about Walter during our call.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>I had mentioned his workshop?<\/p>\n<p>I tried to remember.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Then another possibility arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed book,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Emily frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a ledger kept hidden in a safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Walter&#39;s old bookshelf.<\/p>\n<p>He hid spare cash once inside a repair manual because nobody ever opened it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHide something where it looks ordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a shelf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel heard us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ll search every book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecorative objects. Boxes. Anything visible enough to be ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said the search was continuing.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, none of us slept.<\/p>\n<p>At two sixteen in the morning, Daniel sent a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A red leather-bound volume.<\/p>\n<p>Found inside a hollowed-out family Bible on the lodge&#39;s living room shelf.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had hidden his payment ledger where anyone could see it.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Walter might have.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the image.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Codes.<\/p>\n<p>And near the bottom of the visible page, one name I recognized immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Greg Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it:<\/p>\n<p>$25,000 \u2014 FAMILY COOPERATION ADVANCE.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the phone toward him.<\/p>\n<p>His face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never got twenty-five thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>That question would determine whether my son had been only corrupt, or whether someone had also been framing him for payments he never received.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly Victor&#39;s records became dangerous for a new reason.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger might expose the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Or it might contain the final version of the lie he intended everyone else to believe.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26971\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Red Ledger Made Greg Look Like a Paid Accomplice, Until a Forgotten Bank Record Revealed Who Had Been Using His Name<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel arrived with two detectives within twenty minutes.
