impatience.

“If he believes Margaret gave you information, he may attempt to isolate her further.”

“Then get her out.”

“We're seeking emergency review.”

“How long?”

“Eleanor.”

“Don't use my name like sedation.”

Daniel almost smiled despite himself.

“We're moving as fast as we legally can.”

That afternoon, Mr. Lawson called.

He had filed everything needed to remove Greg as trustee of Emily's inheritance.

Greg did not contest it.

A forensic accountant had also started reviewing the trust.

Then came something we did not expect.

One withdrawal had not gone to Greg.

Emily stared at the statement.

“What do you mean?”

Mr. Lawson pointed to a transfer.

Fifteen thousand dollars.

Recipient: Westbridge Advisory Services.

Greg frowned.

“I didn't authorize that.”

His lawyer leaned closer.

“Could it have been a fee?”

“No.”

“You're certain?”

“Yes.”

Another transfer appeared two months later.

Twenty-two thousand.

Same destination.

Greg looked genuinely confused.

“They took money directly.”

Emily's anger sharpened.

“You gave them access?”

“Only for loan servicing.”

“From my trust?”

“No. From an account I controlled.”

Mr. Lawson tapped the paperwork.

“The trust account was linked.”

Greg turned white.

“I didn't know they could pull from it.”

His lawyer asked, “Did you sign authorization permitting automated debits across linked accounts?”

Greg looked away.

“Probably.”

Emily laughed without humor.

“So they weren't only waiting for Dad to steal from me.”

“They may have been taking money too,” Mr. Lawson said.

That distinction complicated everything again.

Greg had still misused the trust.

But someone else had siphoned from it.

I thought of Victor at my door.

He had known about Emily's money because his companies had touched it.

That evening, Emily stayed late.

She sat at the table with statements spread around her.

Greg stood across the room.

“I'll repay everything.”

She did not look up.

“You can't promise money you don't have.”

“I'll spend the rest of my life doing it.”

“That's different.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

For a moment, they almost looked like father and daughter again.

Then Emily found another document.

Her expression changed.

“Grandma.”

“What?”

“This transfer.”

She turned the laptop toward me.

A Westbridge internal memo had been recovered from Greg's files.

Collateral enhancement pending family property conversion.

I read the line twice.

Below it was my address.

Below that, another note.

Maternal resistance remains primary obstacle.

I stared at the words.

“Primary obstacle.”

Greg looked sick.

Emily scrolled.

There was a date.

Eight months earlier.

Then another note.

Initiate care-placement strategy.

I felt the room go very still.

This was before Greg brought up Silver Pines.

Before he packed the first suitcase.

Before Dana measured my dining room.

Someone had not merely taken advantage of Greg's plan.

They had suggested it.

Greg sat down.

“They told Chuck what to do.”

“Looks like it,” Emily said.

He covered his mouth.

I watched him struggle.

“Mom, I swear I thought the assisted living idea was mine.”

I looked at him.

“That may be the saddest thing you've said yet.”

He closed his eyes.

Because it meant the manipulation had worked so well he mistook someone else's strategy for his own conclusion.

That did not erase what he did.

But it revealed how deliberate Victor's system had been.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

His voice was tight.

“We reached Margaret's facility.”

“And?”

“She's gone.”

I stood.

“What do you mean gone?”

“Transferred this morning.”

“To where?”

“Silver Pines says family arranged private transport.”

“Victor.”

“We're locating him.”

“Where did they take her?”

“That's what we're trying to determine.”

I looked toward the dark window.

Victor had left my porch less than twenty-four hours earlier.

He had asked what Margaret told me.

Now Margaret had disappeared.

Daniel continued.

“Eleanor, do not contact Victor.”

“I won't.”

“Do not contact Margaret's family.”

“I won't.”

“And if anyone comes to your house, don't open the door.”

I looked at the chain.

“Fine.”

He paused.

“That was suspiciously easy.”

“I can learn.”

After we ended the call, Greg stood.

“This is because he knows she talked.”

Emily grabbed her coat.

“Where are you going?”

“To Daniel.”

“He told us to stay here.”

“He told Grandma.”

“Emily.”

She stopped.

I looked at both of them.

“No one does anything foolish.”

Greg almost laughed.

“That's rich coming from us.”

I pointed at him.

“You've exhausted your quota.”

He actually smiled.

Only briefly.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

No words.

Just a photograph.

Margaret Shaw.

She sat in the back seat of a car.

Her face was frightened.

Beside her cheek, someone held up that day's newspaper.

Below the image was one sentence.

STOP TALKING ABOUT CEDAR LAKE.

I stared at the screen.

Emily whispered, “Oh my God.”

Greg's face turned white.

This was no longer about property.

Someone wanted us afraid enough to become silent.

For the first time, I understood exactly how people like Victor stayed powerful.

Not because everyone believed them.

Because frightened people stopped speaking.

I forwarded the photograph to Daniel.

Then I looked at Walter's letter still sitting on the kitchen table.

Protect yourself first.

Tell the truth.

Make the truth cost something.

Victor Shaw had finally shown us what the truth might cost him.

And that meant he was more dangerous now than he had ever been.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10:
