Visiting your doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily&#39;s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey watched Grandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many pictures?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDozens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt suddenly exposed inside my own kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Every ordinary errand had been observed.<\/p>\n<p>Not because someone cared whether I was safe.<\/p>\n<p>Because someone was waiting for weakness.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s also a family profile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Greg?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Emily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does hers say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndependent relationship with grandmother. Potential obstacle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>They had known.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe even before I sold her the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does mine say?\u201d Greg asked.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel paused longer.<\/p>\n<p>Then he read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial distress. Business instability. Estranged from daughter. Motivated by inheritance. High leverage potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg sank into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had summarized his weaknesses as if he were machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Not a man.<\/p>\n<p>Not a son.<\/p>\n<p>A lever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne notation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s voice became careful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not approach mother directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greg covered his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSon will deliver property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>Greg began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders simply collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey believed they knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I did not touch him.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still chose what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you&#39;re choosing what you do now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the table, Emily watched her father.<\/p>\n<p>Something passed across her face.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Not trust.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the first recognition that the man who betrayed us had also been deliberately selected because strangers believed he would.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said arrests might follow, but he could promise nothing yet.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence had to be examined.<\/p>\n<p>Connections proved.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses interviewed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret protected.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#39;s case untangled.<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, I walked to the front window.<\/p>\n<p>Our street was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#39;s house remained dark.<\/p>\n<p>The Chois&#39; porch light burned across the road.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Greg and Emily sat at the same table with several feet of silence between them.<\/p>\n<p>Then headlights swept across my curtains.<\/p>\n<p>A black SUV stopped outside.<\/p>\n<p>A man stepped onto the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>Expensive coat.<\/p>\n<p>Gray hair.<\/p>\n<p>Unhurried movements.<\/p>\n<p>Greg stood.<\/p>\n<p>Every trace of color left his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared through the glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor Shaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor walked up my path.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped outside the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Through the glass, he saw Greg.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily.<\/p>\n<p>Then me.<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Three slow knocks sounded.<\/p>\n<p>Greg whispered, \u201cDon&#39;t open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Months earlier, I might have obeyed simply because fear made obedience feel safe.<\/p>\n<p>Not anymore.<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>I did not intend to invite Victor inside.<\/p>\n<p>I intended to look directly at the man who had studied my family, calculated my son&#39;s weaknesses, photographed my movements, and reduced my home to a target number.<\/p>\n<p>My hand closed around the lock.<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the glass, Victor Shaw waited calmly.<\/p>\n<p>He still believed he had come to speak with the frightened old woman his files described.<\/p>\n<p>He was about to discover that woman had never existed.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26969\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Victor Shaw Came to My Door Expecting Fear, but One Conversation Revealed He Was More Afraid of His Own Mother<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I carried the phone into Walter&#39;s workshop.
