Addison asked.

Maya glanced down.

"Your mother admitted encouraging the estrangement after Ren asked for receipts five years ago."

I turned around.

"Encouraging?"

"She said she could have repaired the relationship but chose not to."

"Why?"

"Because your request for records frightened her."

There.

The suspicion we had formed.

Formal now.

Mom knew if I kept asking about small household transfers, I might eventually ask about older money.

So she let five years of silence grow.

Maybe pushed it.

Because distance had protected her before.

"Did she tell Addison not to call me?"

Maya looked at my sister.

"Yes."

Addison went pale.

"What?"

"You said earlier that after the argument, Sylvia told you Ren needed space."

"I remember."

"She now says she did not want you comparing what each of you had been told."

My sister stared at nothing.

Five years.

We had both wondered why the other never tried.

Mom had actively maintained the silence.

"Did she stop my calls?" Addison asked.

"What calls?"

Addison looked at me.

"I called you once."

My stomach tightened.

"When?"

"About six months after we stopped talking."

"I never got it."

She looked at Maya.

Maya checked her notes.

"Sylvia mentioned one call."

My body went cold.

"What happened?"

Addison whispered, "I called the house first because I didn't know if your number had changed."

Mom told her I had asked not to hear from the family.

I stared.

"I never said that."

"I know."

"And then?"

Addison swallowed.

"I didn't call."

One more missing conversation.

Not because either sister chose silence.

Because Mom stood between.

I had spent years believing Addison accepted the estrangement easily.

She had spent years believing I requested it.

The lie had done exactly what it needed.

"Did Mom admit that?" I asked.

Maya nodded.

"Yes."

That admission changed something in Addison.

I saw it.

The guilt she had carried for not reaching out shifted.

Not disappeared.

But redistributed toward reality.

Then Maya said, "There is one more part you should hear."

I braced.

"Sylvia explained why she kept treating Ren's future share differently from Addison's."

We already knew.

Strength.

Need.

Security.

But Maya's next sentence was new.

"She said she believed Daniel would always compensate Ren later."

I frowned.

"What?"

"She assumed he would restore whatever was moved once the family stabilized."

My stomach tightened.

Dad's later attempts.

The check.

The increased investment contributions.

The restoration note.

Maybe Mom had expected him to keep balancing behind her.

"So she took because she believed Dad would fix it."

"That is part of her account."

"And when he started fixing it?"

"She considered it overcompensation."

Exactly.

She wanted permanent flexibility to take from one side while treating any restoration as excess.

It was an impossible system to balance because fairness itself became the problem.

Addison leaned back.

"Did she admit she was wrong?"

The room went quiet.

Maya answered carefully.

"She said she now understands that she took away choices that were not hers to take."

My sister's eyes filled.

Not "mistakes were made."

Not "paperwork got messy."

Choices that were not hers.

It sounded like Dad's language.

Maybe Mom had finally learned it from the consequences.

"Does that help her legally?" I asked.

"Cooperation can be considered. So can acceptance of responsibility.
