It was an old phone plugged in behind the books."

"Did Mom put it there?"

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

"She wanted audio in case you threatened her."

I stood.

"Does that phone still exist?"

"I don't know."

We called Shaw.

Investigators checked the preservation inventory from Maple Drive.

Several old phones had been collected.

One matched Addison's description.

A black smartphone with a cracked corner.

It had no active service.

Elena examined it.

The device contained old audio recordings.

Most were household sounds.

Television.

Conversations.

Christmas.

The entire confrontation.

Not Addison's shaky camera recording.

A fixed audio file.

It began twenty minutes before I arrived.

Mom's voice was clear.

So was Denny's.

Denny said, "This is a bad idea."

Mom answered, "She needs to show everyone who she is."

Then Addison:

"What if she doesn't get mad?"

Mom:

"She will."

Denny:

"And if she doesn't?"

A pause.

Then Mom said:

"Then Marianne will have a harder time believing she's unstable."

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not inference.

Not suspicion.

Her own voice.

She knew Marianne was asking questions.

She expected conflict.

She wanted my reaction to affect Marianne's view of me.

The recording continued.

Addison sounded uncomfortable.

"Mom, I don't want to do this."

"You don't have to do anything. Just keep your phone out."

"Why?"

"Because your sister rewrites history."

The irony was almost unbearable.

Then Mom said something that made Detective Shaw stop the playback.

"If Ren starts talking about signatures or the trust, nobody answers. Do you understand?"

Silence.

Then Denny:

"Why would she talk about signatures?"

Mom answered:

"She won't."

A beat.

"But if Marianne got to her first, she might."

I stared at the audio waveform on Elena's screen.

Christmas had not been the beginning.

It had been containment.

Mom thought the past might surface.

So she prepared a stage where any question I asked could be reframed as aggression.

Except Marianne had not gotten to me first.

Ruth had.

And once one person broke the silence, everyone else's silence became harder to maintain.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Secret Christmas Recording Exposed Mom’s Plan to Discredit Me, but the Final Minutes Captured Something None of Us Remembered Hearing

Denny did not want to testify.
