Lewis said.

Colin insisted those drafts were not intended for execution.

Then, according to him, some later appeared as finalized documents.

With notarization.

Witness signatures.

He blamed Mom.

Mom, we knew, would likely blame him.

"What about the hospital transfer?" We need to make sure the paperwork holds.

Close enough.

My skin prickled.

"What did Colin understand that to mean?"

"He says she was worried about legal challenges."

"From who?"

"Marianne. I gave you Daniel's signature.

Colin claimed he meant he had given her digital signature images for draft use.

Not forged signed originals.

Plausible.

Self-serving.

Potentially both.

"Do investigators believe him?"

"They believe parts can be corroborated."

"That's not what I asked."

"It's the only answer that matters."

I sighed.

"Fine."

The most important section came near the end.

Detective Shaw asked Colin why Mom was so determined to prevent Dad from speaking directly with me.

Colin's answer ran four paragraphs.

He said the entire unequal-distribution structure depended on Dad believing I approved.

My signature had been used.

My supposed consent justified Addison's condo funds.

My supposed consent justified several business distributions.

My supposed consent was repeated in memoranda, meeting notes and estate-planning discussions.

If Dad spoke to me directly, the lie collapsed.

Not one lie.

All of them.

The forged waiver.

The false statements.

The invented approvals.

The narrative that I didn't care.

The financial structure rested on my silence.

I put the pages down.

For years I had believed my absence made me irrelevant.

It was the opposite.

My absence was useful.

Mom needed me far enough away that she could speak for me.

Dad needed only one direct conversation to expose everything.

That's why the hospital call mattered.

Not because of sentiment.

Because if I had answered and Dad asked one simple question—

Did you agree to give Addison more?

—I would have said no.

Everything would have cracked open before he died.

Addison sat beside me.

"So that's why Mom said I'd lose everything."

I looked at her.

"Probably."

"If Dad talked to you, he'd know."

"Yes."

"And then he'd undo the transfers."

"Likely."

She looked sick.

"I was the leverage."

"No."

"Ren."

"You were part of what she used."

"That's the same thing."

"No."

I turned toward her.

"You didn't create the lie."

"I benefited."

"Yes."

"I defended her."

"Yes."

"I attacked you."

"Yes."

She flinched.

I didn't soften it.

"But none of that makes you the person who forged my consent."

She stared at me.

"Why aren't you angrier?"

"I am."

"You don't sound angry."

"I'm tired of spending anger on things that need decisions."

That answer surprised me as I said it.

Maybe this was what had changed most.

Five years earlier, anger would have felt like action.

Now I wanted outcomes.

The civil case moved first.

A judge ordered a formal accounting of trust-related assets and transactions tied to Dad's estate.

Mom's authority over disputed property was temporarily limited.

Maple Drive could not be sold or refinanced.

Certain accounts were frozen pending review.

Addison asked whether Mom would lose the house.

"No one knows yet," Lewis said.

The house itself remained subject to the trust.

Mom had occupancy rights under certain conditions.

Our beneficial interests remained.

The final result would depend on what transactions were invalidated, what assets could be traced and what claims survived legal deadlines.

Nothing was simple.

The financial review uncovered more money.

Not hidden millions.

Not cinematic treasure.

Something more believable and painful.

Dad had left enough.

Enough for Mom to live securely.

Enough to help Addison.

Enough for me to receive a fair share.

The crisis Mom had described after his death had been exaggerated.

Sometimes invented.

She had not been destitute while I sent checks.

She had been protecting assets, servicing investments and supporting choices she did not want questioned.

That realization humiliated me at first.

Then I rejected the feeling.

I had sent money because I loved them.

Their deception did not make generosity stupidity.

It made deception betrayal.

Marianne told me that once.

I kept it.

Then investigators recovered an old email account belonging to Colin.

Several messages between him and Mom remained.

Most were ordinary.

Schedules.

Bank details.

Property discussions.

But one thread from two months before Dad's death mattered.

Colin wrote:

Daniel is asking for direct confirmation from Ren. You cannot keep postponing this.

Mom replied:

She will say no because she always thinks rules matter more than people.

I read the sentence twice.

It sounded exactly like her.

Colin:

Then the structure cannot continue as represented.

Mom:

It can if Daniel stops panicking.

Colin:

He is not panicking. He is checking.

That line almost made me smile.

Even Colin had understood something Mom hated.

Dad was checking.

Like me.

Mom replied:

If he talks to Ren, she will make this about fairness and wreck what I built for Addison.

There it was.

Not murder.

Not some grand conspiracy.

Something smaller.

More human.

More familiar.

She believed unfairness could be justified if she decided who needed what.

She believed my resistance would be selfish.

She believed protecting Addison entitled her to speak for me.

And once money moved, lies had to multiply to protect earlier lies.

Colin wrote one final message:

You cannot keep using Ren's name without Ren.

Mom's response contained six words.

I know my daughter better than you.

I stared at that sentence for a long time.

No.

She knew the version of me that was useful.

The daughter who would give in.

The daughter who didn't need much.

The daughter whose distance could be interpreted as indifference.

The daughter whose silence could be turned into consent.

But she had never understood the woman who finally asked for receipts.

A week later, Mom's attorney requested a meeting.

Not investigators.

Not prosecutors.

Family counsel.

Civil resolution.

Marianne asked whether I wanted to attend.

"Yes."

Addison did too.

Ruth refused.

Denny had moved out of Maple Drive by then.

He did not file for divorce immediately, but he rented an apartment.

Mom was alone in the house.

When we arrived at the law office, I almost failed to recognize her.

She looked smaller.

Not physically much different.

Something else.

For the first time, she entered a room without controlling the story inside it.

Her attorney sat beside her.

Mom did not look at Addison.

She looked at me.

"You must be very pleased."

I sat across from her.

"No."

"Don't pretend."

"I'm not."

"You've spent months tearing apart your father's life."

"I spent months learning what happened."

"You think that's different?"

"Yes."

Her attorney touched her arm.

She ignored him.

"You always needed to be right."

I almost answered.

Then I didn't.

That sentence belonged to the old rhythm.

Mom accused.

I defended.

She shifted.

I explained.

Nothing changed.

So I asked one question.

"Why did you sign my name?"

Her face went still.

"I didn't."

"Why did you tell Dad I agreed when I hadn't?"

"I believed you would."

"Why?"

"Because you knew Addison needed more."

"That wasn't your choice."

"You had a career."

"Not your choice."

"You owned a home."

"Not your choice."

"Your sister was struggling."

"Still not your choice."

Her voice rose.

"So what was I supposed to do?
