Thomas explained. "Kept it for several years. Then returned it to Kane in exchange for another debt reduction."

I closed my eyes.

My son had paid seventy-five thousand dollars for his father's evidence.

Then sold it back.

A transaction in truth.

"What was he trying to do when he bought it?"

Thomas relayed Michael's statement.

"He says he intended to give it to you."

I laughed bitterly.

Of course he did.

"Did he?"

"No."

"Why?"

"He opened it."

"And?"

"There were records of his gambling."

My stomach turned.

Richard had documented everything.

So Michael kept the evidence to protect himself.

Then later traded it back to Kane.

"How long did he have it?"

"Nearly six years."

Six years.

Six years during which he could have told me.

Could have told police.

Could have told Rebecca.

Could have ended Kane's leverage.

Instead he held the truth because it contained his shame.

That was the mechanism behind everything.

Not greed alone.

Not fear alone.

Shame.

"Where was the case during those six years?"

"Storage unit."

"Did Jennifer know?"

"Eventually."

"Did Lisa?"

"No."

"Did Rebecca?"

"No."

Always no.

Always the wife last.

I looked at the men around the table.

Richard had hidden things from me out of protection.

Michael hid things from Rebecca out of self-protection.

Different motives.

Same result.

The person sleeping beside them lived inside a manufactured reality.

I stood.

"I need to talk to Rebecca."

Thomas cautioned me.

"Michael should tell her."

"He should have."

"He says he intends to today."

"Then I'll wait until tomorrow."

That was different from rescuing.

Give him the chance.

Not endless chances.

One defined one.

"If he doesn't?"

"Then I tell her what affects her life."

Thomas nodded.

The next morning, Rebecca called me.

Her voice was hollow.

"He told me."

"Everything?"

"I don't know what everything is anymore."

That sentence hurt.

"What did he tell you?"

"The gambling."

"Okay."

"The debt."

"Okay."

"The black case."

"Okay."

"That he sold it back."

"Okay."

"The new Kane loan."

I closed my eyes.

He had told her.

"How are you?"

"I don't know."

"That's allowed."

She laughed once, then cried.

"He kept saying he was protecting us."

"I know."

"He let me think the company was just struggling."

"I know."

"He let me refinance our own house two years ago."

My body went cold.

"What?"

Rebecca sniffed.

"He said it was for expansion."

"How much?"

"One hundred fifty thousand."

My stomach turned.

That money had likely fed debts or gambling.

"Did he tell you where that money went?"

"Some to the company."

"Some?"

"He doesn't know yet."

My chest tightened.

"Rebecca, get your own lawyer."

She went quiet.

"Separate from Michael's."

"Yes."

"And a forensic accountant."

"Yes."

She started crying again.

"I feel stupid."

"No."

The word came quickly.

"Don't."

"But I signed things."

"So did I."

She stopped.

"I signed papers Richard put in front of me because I trusted him."

"Did he lie?"

"By omission."

She breathed slowly.

"Then how do you trust anyone again?"

The question was familiar.

"I don't know yet."

"That's not comforting."

"No."

We both laughed weakly.

Then I said something I needed to hear too.

"Maybe trust isn't the next step."

"What is?"

"Verification."

She was quiet.

"That sounds awful."

"It sounds unromantic."

"Same thing."

I smiled.

"Maybe for a while."

After the call, I accepted the ordinary family's offer on the house.

Not Steven's.

Not the highest.

The clean one.

Claire congratulated me.

Closing in thirty days.

Thirty days.

I stood in the kitchen and looked around.

A month.

Then this house would belong to someone else.

Richard's desk would come with me.

The red folder.

His letters.

The photographs I wanted.

Not everything.

I would leave some furniture.

Sell some.

Give some away.

Then Thomas called with one more update from Harold Vance.

"There's a beneficiary designation Richard filed the week he died."

My heart tightened.

"Another estate document?"

"Not exactly."

"What?"

"A separate charitable foundation instruction."

"Foundation?"

"Richard intended to fund it after exposing Kane."

"With what money?"

"Part of his separate investment assets."

"How much?"

"Approximately four hundred thousand at the time."

"Does it still exist?"

Thomas paused.

"That's what we're trying to determine."

"Who was supposed to administer it?"

He read the name.

Michael Harris.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

"Did Michael ever receive the money?"

"We don't know."

"If he did?"

"Then we need to know what happened to it."

I stared at the accepted house contract on my table.

Every time I thought the financial story had ended, another door opened.

This time, however, the money was not mine.

It had been meant for someone else.

And if Michael had touched it, I would not be the mother deciding whether to forgive.

He would have to answer to people he had never met.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Richard’s Missing Foundation Money Forced Michael to
