It was not collected for the purpose we're using it for now. Storage conditions were adequate, but degradation can complicate interpretation."

"Did you find something?"

"Yes."

"What?"

"Propranolol."

The word meant nothing to me.

Thomas looked at her.

"A beta blocker."

"Correct."

I frowned.

"Richard took a beta blocker."

Dr. Shah nodded.

"He took metoprolol."

"So?"

"Propranolol is a different drug."

My mouth went dry.

"Could the hospital have given it to him?"

"We checked the medication administration record. No."

"Could his doctor have prescribed it?"

"No propranolol prescription appears in the records we've reviewed."

"Could it be a lab mistake?"

"Possible, which is why we repeated testing using a second portion of the preserved sample."

"And?"

"Same result."

I looked at Ruiz.

"What does that mean?"

She allowed Dr. Shah to answer.

"It means propranolol appears to have been in Richard's bloodstream when the sample was drawn."

"How much?"

"The concentration is difficult to reconstruct precisely because of specimen age and post-collection factors."

"Was it enough to kill him?"

Dr. Shah did not dramatize.

"We cannot say that."

"Could it have contributed?"

"Potentially."

"How?"

"Propranolol can lower heart rate and blood pressure. In certain circumstances, excessive exposure can worsen cardiac instability."

Richard had already had serious heart disease.

"What happens if someone takes propranolol while already taking metoprolol?"

"Combined beta-blocking effects could be clinically significant, depending on dose, timing, metabolism, and the person's health."

"Could it trigger a heart attack?"

"That's too simple a formulation. It could contribute to cardiovascular collapse or complicate an existing cardiac event."

I stared at the folder.

"So somebody poisoned him."

Ruiz spoke immediately.

"We do not know that."

"But he wasn't prescribed it."

"Correct."

"Then how did it get there?"

"That's what we're investigating."

Dr. Shah added, "Medication errors happen. Pills can be confused. Samples can have complexities. Intentional administration is one possibility, not the only one."

I nodded.

Evidence.

Not certainty.

But my hands had begun shaking.

"What did propranolol look like thirteen years ago?"

"Depends on manufacturer."

"Could it look like one of Richard's pills?"

"Possibly."

"Could someone put it in his pill organizer?"

"Yes."

I thought of Sunday evenings.

My hands sorting tablets.

White.

Pink.

Small blue.

I had filled the organizer.

"Then I would have put it there."

"Not necessarily."

"Who else touched his medication?"

Jennifer.

She had asked about it.

Photographed it.

Called the pharmacy.

And Kane had obtained medical records.

I hated where my mind went.

Ruiz saw it.

"Don't decide yet."

"I know."

She placed another document on the table.

"We found something else."

"What?"

"Internet search history."

My heart tightened.

"Whose?"

"An old computer recovered from Robert Kane's former office."

"After thirteen years?"

"The machine was stored with business records seized in connection with a separate financial warrant involving Steven Kane."

I stared.

"And?"

"Someone searched for interactions between propranolol and metoprolol."

My hands went cold.

"When?"

"Nine days before Richard died."

Thomas leaned forward.

"Can you identify the user?"

"Not conclusively."

"Account?"

"Generic office administrator login."

"IP?"

"The computer itself."

"Who had access?"

"Multiple employees. Robert. Steven. David Cole at times. Others."

"Jennifer?"

Ruiz paused.

"According to David, Jennifer visited the office during that period."

My chest tightened.

"Michael?"

"Also possible."

"Mercer?"

"He says no."

I almost laughed.

Everyone had become possible.

Nobody trustworthy enough to eliminate.

"Any other searches?"

Ruiz slid the printout toward me.

Beta blocker overdose symptoms.

Propranolol onset time.

Heart attack natural death toxicology.

I stopped reading.

Evelyn, sitting beside me, reached for my hand.

I let her hold it.

"Those searches were nine days before Richard died?"

"Over a three-day period beginning nine days before."

"Did Richard know?"

"We don't know."

"What about the fake medical-record request?"

"Two weeks before death."

Sequence.

Obtain Richard's records.

Study his medication.

Search drug interactions.

Then Kane enters my house the night before Richard dies.

The facts lined themselves up too neatly.

That frightened me.

Neat stories were often dangerous.

"What would you need to prove someone gave it to him?"

Ruiz answered.

"Evidence connecting a person to the drug and administration."

"Can you find pharmacy purchases?"

"We're trying."

"Thirteen years later?"

"Controlled records, insurance claims, archived databases, old business records. We'll see."

Thomas asked, "Was propranolol controlled?"

"No."

"So cash purchase could be invisible."

"Correct."

Dr. Shah continued explaining.

The concentration could not establish an exact dose.

Richard might have taken one tablet.

Several.

Timing could only be estimated broadly.

His heart disease remained a major independent cause of death.

Even if propranolol contributed, proving intentional poisoning would require more.

I appreciated her caution.

I hated it too.

After they left, I sat alone in Richard's study.

The photograph concealing the old wall compartment rested on the desk.

I picked it up.

Richard and I were laughing in the picture.

Thirty years married.

His arm around my waist.

My head turned toward him.

I remembered what happened immediately after the photograph was taken.

Richard had whispered that the restaurant's anniversary cake tasted like drywall.

I laughed so hard the photographer captured it.

That man had been real.

So were his mistakes.

He had hidden things from me.

Protected Michael too long.

Settled with Kane instead of exposing him.

Tried to solve danger privately.

Maybe every secret had begun with a reason that sounded like love.

Then secrecy became the thing that allowed worse choices to grow.

My phone rang.

Lisa.

"Mom?"

"Yes."

"Jennifer is here."

My body tensed.

"At your house?"

"No. Outside yours."

I looked toward the security monitor.

Jennifer stood at the gate.

Alone.

"How do you know?"

"She called me."

"Why?"

"She says she needs to tell you something before the police find out."

My stomach tightened.

"Did she say what?"

"No."

I called Thomas.

He told me not to let Jennifer inside until he arrived.

Ten minutes later, he came through the gate.

Detective Ruiz joined by phone.

Then I admitted Jennifer into the sunroom.

She looked terrible.

Her hair was unwashed.

Dark circles beneath her eyes.

She carried no bag.

"Sit."

She did.

Thomas positioned the recorder openly.

Jennifer stared at it.

"Is that necessary?"

"Yes."

She looked at me.

"You found something in Dad's blood."

My chest tightened.

"How do you know?"

"Michael called me."

"How does Michael know?"

"His attorney."

That was plausible.

"What do you know about propranolol?"

Her face changed.

Not enough for proof.

Enough for fear.

"Jennifer."

She began crying.

"I didn't give it to him."

I had not told her the drug name.

Thomas went perfectly still.

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

Jennifer realized her mistake.

"Oh God."

"How did you know?"

"Mom."

"How did you know it was propranolol?"

She covered her face.

"I didn't give it to him."

"That wasn't my question."

"I swear."

"How did you know?"

She lowered her hands.

"Kane asked me to get it."

The room seemed to contract.

"When?"

"About a week before Dad died."

"Why?"

"He said he wanted to prove something."

"What?"

"That Dad's dizziness was medication-related."

"That makes no sense."

"I know."

"Did you get it?"

Jennifer looked down.

"Yes."

My breath caught.

Thomas said quietly, "Where?"

"A pharmacy."

"Prescription?"

"No. Not directly."

"Then how?"

"A friend had some."

"Who?"

"She's dead."

"Name."

"Carol Benson."

I knew Carol.

She had worked with Jennifer years ago.

"What did you tell her?"

"That someone in the family had forgotten medication while traveling."

"How many pills?"

"Ten."

"What dosage?"

"I don't remember."

"Did you give them to Kane?"

Jennifer's eyes filled.

"Yes."

I felt as though I were watching my daughter through glass.

"Where?"

"His office."

"When?"

"Six days before Dad died."

"Why didn't you tell police?"

"I didn't know Dad had taken any."

"You knew Kane had them."

"Yes."

"You knew Kane came here the night before Dad died."

"Not until afterward."

"You knew he had asked for Dad's medical records."

"Yes."

"You knew he was blackmailing him."

"I didn't understand how serious it was."

"Stop."

My voice rose.

"Stop telling me you didn't understand."

She flinched.

"You were an adult woman. You had children. A career. A mortgage. You knew how to keep secrets, forge documents, contact lawyers, track bank accounts, and plan the transfer of my house."

I leaned toward her.

"You do not get to become helpless only when responsibility arrives."

Jennifer sobbed.

"I didn't know he'd hurt Dad."

"Did Kane say he would?"

"No."

"Did he ask how Dad took his medicine?"

"Yes."

"Did you tell him?"

She whispered, "Yes."

"Did you tell him where it was?"

"Yes."

My stomach twisted.

"Did you give him access to the house?"

"No."

"Garage remote?"

"No."

"Key?"

"No."

"Alarm code?"

She stopped.

My heart sank.

"Jennifer."

"He already knew the old code."

"How?"

"Michael."

Of course.

"But Dad had changed it," she added.

"When?"

"A few weeks before."

That explained why Kane might have needed another way inside.

"Then how did he enter that night?"

"I don't know."

Thomas asked, "Did you open the garage remotely?"

"No."

"Did Michael?"

"I don't know."

"Who had remotes?"

"Me, Michael, Lisa, Mom."

Lisa.

I called her immediately.

She answered.

"Did you have a garage remote when Dad died?"

"I think so."

"Where was it?"

"My car."

"Did anyone borrow your car around then?"

Silence.

My pulse quickened.

"Lisa."

"Jennifer."

I looked at my oldest daughter.

She closed her eyes.

"When?"

Lisa answered.

"The day before Dad died."

Jennifer began shaking her head.

"No."

"You borrowed my car because yours was supposedly getting serviced."

Jennifer whispered, "Oh God."

I remembered David's notebook.

He recorded Jennifer's Lexus at my house.

So why would she need Lisa's car?

"Your Lexus wasn't being serviced," I said.

"No."

"Then why borrow Lisa's?"

Jennifer's face had gone pale.

"Kane asked me to."

The room fell silent.

"Why?"

"He said someone needed to use a car that couldn't be connected to him."

Thomas stared.

"Who used it?"

"I don't know."

"Where did you leave it?"

"Parking garage downtown."

"With the remote inside?"

Jennifer began crying harder.

"Yes."

"Did you retrieve it?"

"The next morning."

"What time?"

"After Mom called about Dad."

I felt sick.

"Was anything different?"

"The gas tank was lower."

"Anything missing?"

"No."

"The garage remote?"

"Still there."

Thomas immediately called Ruiz.

She said they would try to recover any old parking records, though chances were poor.

Then Jennifer spoke again.

"There was something in the cup holder."

We all looked at her.

"What?"

"A pharmacy bag."

My hands went cold.

"Empty?"

"Yes."

"Did you keep it?"

"No."

"What did you do?"

"Threw it away."

"Where?"

"At work."

Thirteen years ago.

Gone.

Thomas asked, "Did it have a name?"

"I didn't look."

"Think."

"I didn't."

"Was there a receipt?"

"I don't remember."

I sat back.

Jennifer had obtained propranolol.

Given it to Kane.

Provided medical information.

Helped secure a vehicle containing a garage remote.

And Kane had visited Richard the night before his death.

Yet she still might not have known what Kane intended.

That possibility made everything worse, not better.

Because evil did not always require a room full of people agreeing to do something terrible.

Sometimes it required one person willing to do it and several others willing not to ask why.

"Why are you telling me now?"

Jennifer wiped her face.

"Because Kane called me this morning."

Thomas stiffened.

"What did he want?"

"He said the police were looking in the wrong direction."

"What direction should they look?"

"He said if I talked, he'd tell them it was my idea."

My voice came out flat.

"Was it?"

"No."

"Anything else?"

Jennifer nodded.

"He said Dad deserved what happened."

My chest tightened.

"What exactly?"

She looked at me.

"He said, 'Richard made his choice when he decided to destroy my family.'"

Thomas wrote the sentence.

"Did Kane admit giving Richard the drug?"

"No."

"Did he admit entering the house?"

"No."

"Then what did he admit?"

Jennifer swallowed.

"Nothing directly."

Of course.

Kane had survived decades through implication.

Threats.

Half-truths.

Other people's fear.

My phone buzzed.

Detective Ruiz.

Thomas answered.

She had received another result.

A fingerprint examination of Richard's preserved nitroglycerin bottle.

Most prints were unusable.

Mine appeared.

Richard's appeared.

One partial print did not match either of us.

They compared it against available known prints from current evidence.

The partial was insufficient for a courtroom identification.

But it was consistent in several points with one person.

Robert Kane.

Jennifer made a choking sound.

I stared at the table.

Thomas asked, "How strong?"

Ruiz repeated the limitation.

Not enough for identification.

Not proof.

But another piece.

Then she added something else.

Investigators had searched Steven Kane's property that morning.

Inside an old locked filing cabinet, they found records belonging to his father.

One was an
