He and Richard argued. I couldn't hear everything from the street, but it got loud."

"How long was Michael here?"

"Maybe forty minutes."

"Then?"

"He left."

"And Richard?"

"I saw him through the front window. He was alive."

I closed my eyes.

Alive after Michael left.

The fact did not absolve my son of everything.

But it mattered.

"What happened next?"

"A second car came."

Thomas immediately asked, "Whose?"

David did not answer.

"Mr. Cole?"

"I need protection before I say more."

"From Kane?"

"From everyone."

Mercer laughed bitterly.

"Still dramatic after all these years."

David's voice sharpened.

"Tell Mercer to explain the blue account."

Daniel's face emptied.

I looked at him.

"What blue account?"

"Nothing."

David laughed.

"Right."

Thomas stared at Mercer.

"Daniel?"

"It's irrelevant."

"Then explain it."

Mercer said nothing.

David continued.

"The blue account is where Kane's money and Richard's money crossed paths after the settlement."

Mercer stepped toward the phone.

"That's a lie."

"Then show Maggie the statements."

My heart tightened.

"Daniel."

Mercer looked at me.

"I can explain."

That phrase had become poison.

"Then do it."

"The account wasn't Richard's."

"Whose was it?"

"Mine."

I stared.

Mercer lowered himself into a chair.

"It was a client escrow account."

Thomas's face hardened.

"You didn't disclose that."

"I didn't think it was connected."

David said through the speaker, "He knew."

Mercer shouted, "You don't know what I knew."

Thomas ended the call.

I stared at him.

"Why did you do that?"

"Because we're not going to conduct a three-way accusation session while nobody produces evidence."

He pointed at Mercer.

"You first. Blue account."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

Years seemed to settle onto his face.

"After Richard dissolved the partnership with Kane, there were payments that couldn't be distributed immediately because ownership was disputed."

"How much?"

"At the highest point, about two million."

"Richard's?"

"Some. Kane's. Other investors'."

"Why blue?"

"My office used colored internal labels. Blue meant disputed escrow."

"Did Richard move money through it?"

"Yes."

"Did Kane?"

"Yes."

"So David was telling the truth."

"About that."

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because the account closed years before Richard died."

Thomas leaned forward.

"Do you have records?"

"Archived."

"Get them."

Mercer nodded.

"Today."

Another nod.

"And you're not leaving until we've arranged preservation."

Daniel's face tightened, but he agreed.

I looked at Thomas.

"What about David?"

"We arrange a controlled meeting."

"Today?"

"If law enforcement agrees."

The detective assigned to the fraud complaint was Elena Ruiz.

She arrived at my house shortly after three.

Ruiz was perhaps forty-five, compact, calm, and unimpressed by family drama.

She read David's messages.

Listened to Thomas.

Then looked at Mercer.

"You're staying here?"

"For now."

"Good."

She arranged for David to meet us at a police substation that evening.

He resisted until Ruiz spoke to him directly.

At seven-fifteen, I sat in a small interview room with Thomas and Ruiz.

David Cole entered through another door.

He was in his late sixties, broad-shouldered despite a slight stoop, with white hair cut close to his scalp.

He looked at me and stopped.

"You look like him."

"No, I don't."

A faint smile appeared.

"No. You're right."

He sat.

Ruiz began recording.

"Mr. Cole, why did Robert Kane send you to the Harris residence on the night before Richard Harris died?"

"Michael owed him money."

"We know."

"Kane also believed Michael was playing both sides."

"Meaning?"

"Michael was taking payments from Kane for information while still asking Richard to bail him out."

My stomach tightened.

"What information?"

"Richard's meetings. Bank movements. Where documents were stored. What Mercer was doing."

I glanced at Thomas.

"Did Michael tell Kane about the red folder?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because Michael didn't know about it then."

That surprised me.

"Jennifer?"

"She knew there were papers, not where."

Ruiz asked, "What happened at the house?"

David folded his hands.

"Michael arrived. Richard let him in. They argued."

"Could you hear them?"

"Pieces."

"What pieces?"

"Richard said he was done paying for Michael's mistakes."

My throat tightened.

"Michael said Kane would destroy all of them."

"Anything threatening?"

"Michael said, 'If you do this tomorrow, everything falls apart.'"

"Do what?"

"Richard was going to federal investigators."

Thomas wrote quickly.

"Did Richard say that?"

"Yes."

"He came onto the porch after Michael left and made a call."

"To whom?"

"Mercer, I assumed."

Daniel had said Richard called him.

"Then?"

David looked at me.

"A car arrived at ten-forty-seven."

"Whose?"

"Jennifer's."

I stopped breathing.

"No."

David's face remained steady.

"I wrote down the plate."

He removed an old folded notebook from his jacket.

Ruiz took it.

The paper was yellowed.

Dates.

Times.

Vehicle descriptions.

The plate number.

Jennifer's old Lexus.

I remembered that car.

Richard had helped her buy it.

"What was Jennifer doing here?"

"I don't know why she came."

"How long did she stay?"

"Twenty-three minutes."

"Did she leave before Richard?"

"Yes."

"Was he alive?"

"I saw him in the doorway."

Relief and dread arrived together.

Michael had left Richard alive.

Jennifer had left him alive.

"Then who came after?"

David looked at Ruiz.

"This is the part Kane paid me to forget."

No one spoke.

"At eleven-thirty-six, Kane arrived."

My hands went cold.

"Robert Kane came to my house."

"Yes."

"Did Richard let him in?"

"Eventually."

"What do you mean?"

"Kane knocked. Richard didn't answer. Kane called somebody. A few minutes later, the garage door opened."

"Who opened it?"

"I couldn't see."

My pulse quickened.

"Did Kane have a remote?"

"I don't know."

Jennifer had retained an old garage remote years later.

Had she already had one then?

"How long was Kane inside?"

"Almost an hour."

"What happened?"

"I saw him leave."

"Richard?"

"Didn't see him again."

Ruiz asked, "Why didn't you report this after Richard died?"

David's jaw tightened.

"Because the official cause was heart attack."

"That isn't an answer."

"Kane paid me fifty thousand dollars."

I stared.

"For silence?"

"Yes."

"You took it."

"Yes."

My voice came out colder than I expected.

"And now you're here because?"

"Because he contacted me last week."

"Why?"

"He wanted the notebook."

The one Ruiz now held.

"What did you tell him?"

"That I'd destroyed it."

"Why hadn't you?"

David looked at me.

"Same reason Richard kept records. Cowards like proof when they finally decide to tell the truth."

Ruiz asked about the recording.

David took out a flash drive.

"This is a voicemail Richard left me."

"Why would my husband call you?"

"He knew I was watching the house."

My breath caught.

"What?"

"Kane didn't know Richard knew."

"How did Richard know?"

"Richard caught me following him weeks earlier."

"And didn't call police?"

"No."

"Why?"

"He offered me money to tell him what Kane was doing."

I almost laughed from disbelief.

"So you worked for both of them."

"Yes."

Mercer had accused him correctly.

"Did Richard trust you?"

"No."

"Good."

David accepted the insult.

"He shouldn't have."

Ruiz secured the drive.

We listened to a copy.

Richard's voice filled the room.

"David, it's Richard. Michael came by. Jennifer too. Kane will probably be next. Don't interfere unless he tries to enter by force. I'm finished bargaining. Tomorrow morning, everything goes to the investigators. Maggie gets the truth after that. I should have told her years ago."

My eyes filled.

Richard continued.

"If Robert offers you money, take it if you have to. Just don't destroy your notes."

The voicemail ended.

David looked at the table.

"He knew me pretty well."

"You took Kane's money."

"Yes."

"But kept the notes."

"Yes."

Ruiz asked, "Did Richard ever contact you again?"

"No."

"What time was the voicemail?"

"Eleven-eleven."

Twenty-five minutes before Kane arrived.

Thomas asked, "Did you see Kane carrying anything when he left?"

David thought.

"A small bag."

"What kind?"

"Medical-looking."

My chest tightened.

Ruiz immediately said, "Describe it without interpreting."

"Black nylon. Zippered. Whether you planned to sell the house."

I felt exposed in a way that had nothing to do with bank statements.

My daughter had turned our family into a report.

"Why would Kane care whether I sold?"

"Because he believed Richard's reserve could eventually be reached through the property trust."

Thomas shook his head.

"He was wrong."

"Maybe. But Kane spent years trying to find leverage."

"Against me."

"Against anyone."

Ruiz asked, "When did Jennifer stop cooperating?"

David looked at me.

"I don't think she has."

My phone buzzed inside my purse.

I took it out.

Jennifer.

A text.

Mom, please don't believe David Cole. Dad never trusted him.

I stared at the message.

Then at David.

Nobody had told Jennifer where I was.

Nobody had told her who I was meeting.

I showed Thomas.

His expression hardened.

Ruiz read it.

"Who knew this meeting was happening?"

"People in this room. Lisa."

Lisa.

My stomach tightened.

No.

I refused to leap there.

Thomas called Lisa.

She answered immediately.

"Mom?"

"Did you tell Jennifer I'm meeting David Cole?"

"What?
