My property documents were falsified.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I had every right.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me differently then.<\/p>\n<p>Not as his mother.<\/p>\n<p>As an opponent.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt more than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Did you change the will?&quot; he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stared at my face.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You did.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Still I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Jennifer said you would.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then talk to Jennifer.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Did you cut us out?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Why is that your question right now?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Because it&#39;s relevant.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No. It&#39;s revealing.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You can&#39;t erase us because you&#39;re angry.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I can&#39;t erase you.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then what did you do?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Protected myself.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;From us.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Yes.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The word sat between us.<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked suddenly older.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I came here to fix this.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No. You came here because Kane increased his price.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas opened the sunroom door.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You should go.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Michael turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I wasn&#39;t talking to you.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;But you&#39;re standing in my client&#39;s home after admitting possession of potentially relevant financial evidence.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mom.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;If Kane releases those documents, you may find out things about Dad you don&#39;t want to know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Richard&#39;s letters.<\/p>\n<p>His hidden notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The money he had concealed.<\/p>\n<p>His fear.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Michael was right.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Richard had done things I would hate.<\/p>\n<p>Love did not make him incapable of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>But neither did secrets make Michael honest.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then I&#39;ll know them.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Michael&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You&#39;d rather destroy his reputation?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#39;d rather know who my husband was than spend the rest of my life protecting a story.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Then he left.<\/p>\n<p>At the gate, he paused and turned toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>For one second, I thought he might wave.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he took out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes after his truck disappeared, mine rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>A man&#39;s voice said, &quot;Mrs. Harris?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Who is this?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You already know.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Robert Kane.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas immediately reached for his phone to begin taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>Kane&#39;s voice was smooth.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Almost polite.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Your husband made a mess thirteen years ago.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What do you want?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Something that belongs to me.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The reserve doesn&#39;t.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>A soft laugh.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Richard prepared you well.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Richard prepared records.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Records can be manufactured.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;So can powers of attorney.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Kane said, &quot;Careful who you trust.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I don&#39;t trust you.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You shouldn&#39;t trust Mercer either.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What do you want?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Meet me.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;No.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Then I&#39;ll send you something.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>A file arrived less than a minute later.<\/p>\n<p>Audio.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas told me not to open it until he copied it.<\/p>\n<p>Once he had, we played the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s voice filled my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Older than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Tired.<\/p>\n<p>Angry.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I moved the money, Robert.
