Habits only I would understand."

"Such as?"

"He hated obvious safes. He said anything labeled private was an invitation."

I thought of the notebook.

Private.

Maybe that had been meant to be found eventually.

"He also hated putting important papers with financial papers."

"Where did he put them?" Thomas asked.

"Books."

We had searched the books.

But perhaps we had searched them like investigators.

Not like his wife.

I stood in front of the history shelves.

Richard did not arrange books alphabetically.

He arranged them according to what he called "arguments."

Presidents with generals.

Industrialists with reformers.

Wars beside books about diplomacy.

I used to complain because nobody else could find anything.

Then I saw a book that did not belong.

The Complete Garden Guide.

Green cover.

Thick.

Between biographies of Theodore Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

I laughed softly.

"What?"

Thomas stepped closer.

"Richard hated gardening."

I pulled the book free.

It was lighter than it should have been.

The pages had been hollowed out.

Inside was a small key.

Not a folder.

Thomas took a photograph before I touched it.

"Recognize it?"

"No."

Evelyn pointed toward the desk.

"Locked drawer?"

Richard's desk had no locked drawers.

At least none I knew about.

We searched again.

Nothing.

Then I remembered Richard's old rolltop desk in the upstairs guest room.

We had moved it there after renovating the study years ago.

The key fit.

Inside the narrow locked drawer was a red folder.

My hands trembled.

Thomas stopped me.

"Before we open it, photographs."

He documented where it was found.

Then he lifted it out.

The folder was sealed with two strips of old tape.

On the front, Richard had written:

For Margaret only.

I sat on the guest-room bed.

For a moment, I couldn't make myself open it.

Evelyn sat beside me.

Thomas stood quietly by the desk.

Finally I broke the tape.

The first page was a letter.

Maggie,

If you're reading this, then the situation became worse than I hoped.

My vision blurred.

I kept reading.

Richard wrote that the reserve account was legally mine.

Not marital property hidden from taxation.

Not stolen partnership money.

Not a disputed settlement.

Mine.

He had created it using proceeds from a property investment he made with money inherited from his mother.

He had deliberately documented the source because he feared Robert Kane might someday claim otherwise.

Attached were purchase records.

Tax filings.

Settlement documents.

Bank transfers.

Every step of the money's path.

Thomas examined them rapidly.

"This is what Kane doesn't want you to have."

"Why?"

"Because if these records are valid, his claim to the reserve is extremely weak."

"So he can't take it."

"He can still make trouble."

"But not successfully?"

"I don't say that before verification."

I gave him a look.

He almost smiled.

"Likely not."

Beneath the financial documents was another letter.

This one was addressed to all three children.

I recognized the content from what Lisa had described.

Richard told them plainly that the support he had given them during his lifetime was not ownership in my future.

He wrote that the house belonged to me.

My accounts belonged to me.

Any decision regarding the estate belonged to me.

Then came a line that made me stop.

One of you has already crossed a line I never believed my child would cross.

No name.

I read faster.

Richard wrote that someone had shared confidential information with Robert Kane.

Someone had tried to use knowledge of the reserve account to pressure him into releasing money.

Someone had risked my financial security for personal gain.

Michael.

It had to be Michael.

Then I turned the page.

Richard had named the child.

Jennifer.

I stared at the word.

"No."

Thomas leaned closer.

"What?"

I handed him the letter.

He read.

Evelyn looked between us.

"Jennifer?"

I whispered, "Richard says Jennifer contacted Kane first."

My assumptions broke apart.

According to Richard, Jennifer had learned about the reserve while helping him organize medical documents after a minor surgery.

She told Michael.

Michael, already desperate for business funds, approached Kane.

But Jennifer had initiated the leak.

Not because she needed money.

Because she believed Richard was hiding assets that should eventually belong to all three children.

Richard described confronting her.

Jennifer cried.

Apologized.

Promised she would never interfere again.

Richard wanted to believe her.

But he didn't.

That explained his observations.

Jennifer thinks control solves everything.

I kept reading.

Then another name appeared.

Lisa.

But differently.

Richard wrote that Lisa had come to him privately two weeks after the family confrontation.

She warned him that Jennifer and Michael were discussing ways to obtain information about his accounts.

She begged him to change passwords.

She gave him copies of messages between her siblings.

She asked him not to tell them she had done it.

I stopped.

"Lisa was helping him."

Thomas read over my shoulder.

"Apparently."

All this time I had assumed Lisa's silence made her weak.

Richard had thought so too in some ways.

But when it mattered, she had warned him.

Why had she never told me?

The next paragraph answered.

Richard had told her not to.

He feared involving her further would split the family permanently.

He asked Lisa to stay close to Jennifer and Michael and tell him if anything escalated.

"She was watching them."

Evelyn said softly, "And after Richard died?"

I didn't know.

My phone rang.

Lisa.

I answered immediately.

"Mom?"

"Where are you?"

"Home."

"Can you come here?"

Silence.

"Why?"

"I found Dad's red folder."

She stopped breathing.

"You found it?"

"You knew about it."

"Yes."

"Come here."

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"Why?"

"Because Jennifer is here."

I stood.

"With you?"

"She showed up twenty minutes ago."

Thomas moved closer to the phone.

"Why?"

"She wants Dad's papers."

My skin went cold.

"How does she know I found them?"

"I don't know."

Then I heard a voice in the background.

Jennifer.

"Lisa, hang up."

"Don't," I said.

"Mom—"

"Put me on speaker."

Lisa did.

Jennifer's voice came closer.

"Mom, whatever you found, do not give it to Thomas."

"Why?"

"Because you're going to misunderstand it."

I almost laughed.

"That sentence doesn't work on me anymore."

"You have no idea what Dad was involved in."

"I know the reserve account is legally mine."

Silence.

"You found the source records."

"I did."

Jennifer cursed.

Thomas wrote something down.

I continued.

"I also found Dad's letter."

Nothing.

"He named you, Jennifer."

Lisa gasped softly.

Jennifer said, "He was angry."

"He said you told Michael about the reserve."

"I made a mistake."

"You contacted Kane."

"I didn't know what he was."

"You knew Dad didn't trust him."

"I was thirty-eight years old and tired of being treated like a child."

The irony was almost too sharp.

"So you betrayed his confidence to prove you were an adult?"

"That's not fair."

There was that word again.

Always fair when consequences finally reached them.

"Did you create the forged power of attorney because Michael told you to?"

Jennifer didn't answer.

"Or was that your idea too?"

Lisa whispered, "Forged?"

Jennifer snapped, "Lisa, stay out of this."

"No," I said. "She's been out of it long enough."

Then Lisa said something that stopped all of us.

"Mom, I signed something."

My heartbeat changed.

"What?"

"Two years ago."

Jennifer said, "Don't."

Lisa ignored her.

"Michael brought me papers. He said they were to help manage the house if you got sick."

"What papers?"

"I don't know."

"Did they have my signature?"

"I didn't look closely."

Thomas held out his hand for the phone.

"Lisa, this is Thomas. Did you sign as a witness?"

"I think so."

Jennifer shouted in the background.

"Stop talking."

Lisa's voice rose for the first time.

"No! I'm done doing what you tell me."

A door slammed.

Then Lisa breathed hard into the phone.

"She's gone."

"Lock the door," I said.

"I already did."

Thomas asked, "Lisa, why isn't your signature on the version we found?"

"I don't know."

"Could there have been another version?"

"Maybe."

He looked at me.

Another document.

Another layer.

"Do you have anything Michael gave you?" Thomas asked.

"Maybe in my files."

"Don't search while you're alone."

"I'll come there."

"Bring nothing until we arrange it."

Lisa began crying.

"Mom, I should have told you."

"About what?"

"After Dad died, Jennifer and Michael kept looking for the red folder."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought Dad had destroyed it."

"He didn't."

"I know that now."

"Did they ever enter the house without me knowing?"

Lisa went silent.

My stomach tightened.

"How many times?"

"I only know of two."

The rear-door break-in.

"And the other?"

"Last year."

I sat down.

"Who?"

"Jennifer."

"How?"

"She still had an old garage remote."

That explained too much.

I had found the side garage door open once and blamed myself.

"What was she looking for?"

"The folder."

"Did she find anything?"

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because she called Michael afterward and said it wasn't there."

"How did you hear that?"

"I was in her car."

I closed my eyes.

Lisa had known more than she admitted.

But unlike the others, she sounded ashamed of the secrecy rather than angry about losing control.

"Come over," I said.

"Now?"

"Yes."

Thomas raised a hand.

"Not until we confirm Jennifer isn't following her."

He was right.

We arranged for Lisa to meet a police officer at a nearby station and come from there.

While we waited, Thomas examined the red folder page by page.

Near the back he found a sealed envelope.

Not addressed to me.

Addressed to Lisa.

I called her again.

"Dad left something for you."

She began crying before I said anything else.

When Lisa finally arrived, she looked exhausted.

No makeup.

Hair tied carelessly behind her head.

She seemed younger and older at once.

I held out the envelope.

Her hands shook.

"Open it."

She did.

Richard's message was short.

He thanked her for warning him.

He told her he was sorry he had asked her to carry a secret that belonged between adults.

He told her that protecting me did not mean surrendering her life to family conflict.

And he wrote one final request.

If Jennifer and Michael ever turned against me over money, Lisa was to tell me the truth.

She lowered the letter.

Tears covered her face.

"I failed him."

I said nothing.

"I kept thinking I could calm them down."

"Could you?"

"No."

"Did you try?"

"Yes."

"Did you ever tell them to leave me alone?"

"Yes."

"Did they listen?"

She shook her head.

I thought about Richard's line.

Lisa hates conflict so much that she can be persuaded by whoever seems strongest.

Maybe Richard had underestimated her.

Or maybe she had finally decided who she wanted to be.

Thomas cleared his throat.

"Lisa, we need to know everything you remember."

She nodded.

"Okay."

"Start with the forged documents."

She looked at Jennifer's name on the copy.

Then at Michael's.

"There were two powers of attorney."

Thomas became perfectly still.

"Two?"

"The first one had my signature as witness."

"What happened to it?"

"Michael said the bank rejected it."

"Why?"

"Because the notary wasn't valid."

Thomas and I exchanged a look.

"So Jennifer made a second version," he said.

Lisa nodded.

"She said she could fix it."

"Did she?"

"I think so."

The document we found.

"Who signed Mom's name?" Lisa asked.

I watched her face carefully.

"You don't know?"

"No."

"Jennifer created the file."

"That doesn't mean she signed it."

Thomas leaned forward.

"Then who did?"

Lisa looked down.

"I saw Michael practicing Mom's signature once."

The room went silent.

"When?"

"At Jennifer's house."

"Before the second document was submitted?"

"Yes."

My throat tightened.

Jennifer created it.

Michael may have forged the signature.

Both used it.

No misunderstanding remained.

Thomas asked, "Did Jennifer know he was practicing?"

"She was sitting beside him."

I closed my eyes.

Two of my children had worked together to manufacture authority over my finances.

Then Lisa added one more thing.

"They weren't doing it only for the bank statements."

I opened my eyes.

"What else?"

"They wanted to sell the house."

My stomach dropped.

"They couldn't sell it without me."

"They thought the power of attorney would let Michael sign for you."

Thomas stood abruptly.

"It wouldn't necessarily be sufficient, but they may have believed it was."

"When?"

"Last year."

"Why didn't they?"

"Because Dad's property trust blocked the transfer."

Richard.

Thirteen years dead, still protecting me.

I sat very still.

Lisa whispered, "That's when Michael got angry about Dad's conditions."

The conditions regarding contact, coercion, and care of the surviving spouse.

"So Christmas wasn't about reconciliation."

Lisa looked at me with red eyes.

"No."

"What was it about?"

"They wanted you to sign new estate papers."

My entire body went cold.

"What papers?"

"Jennifer had them in her car."

Thomas asked, "Prepared by whom?"

"I don't know."

"What would they have done?"

Lisa swallowed.

"Transferred the house into a family trust."

"Controlled by?"

She looked at me.

"Michael and Jennifer."

I thought of the grandchildren standing outside.

The guilt.

The luggage.

The sudden Christmas appearance.

Not a visit.

A strategy.

"What were you supposed to do?"

Lisa began crying again.

"Convince you."

"And if I refused?"

"I don't know."

"Yes, you do."

She looked away.

"Michael said we should tell you the house was becoming unsafe for you."

My hand tightened around Richard's letter.

"Unsafe."

"He said if you wouldn't agree, we could talk to a doctor about whether you should still be living alone."

Thomas's face hardened.

"Competency challenge."

Lisa nodded.

I felt no anger at first.

Only silence.

Then I remembered Michael on the phone.

You're fine.

After the hospital.

Fine when my health meant he didn't have to visit.

Possibly incompetent when my independence stood between him and my house.

I stood.

"Thomas."

"Yes?"

"I know what I want to do with my will now."

Lisa looked up.

I did not look away.

"Prepare it."

Thomas closed the red folder.

"Are you certain?"

"Completely."

Outside, one of the new security cameras flashed as it finished its startup cycle.

For the first time in months, the house no longer felt empty.

It felt defended.

And before anyone left that evening, I made one more decision.

I would not wait for my children to come after my property again.

The next move would be mine.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Changed My Will Before My Children Could Challenge Me, Then Thomas Found the Draft They Planned to Make Me Sign

Thomas called the police.
