I joined a local gardening group whose members argued about compost with the seriousness of diplomats negotiating a treaty. I took myself to a matinee one Wednesday afternoon and discovered I preferred movies when nobody whispered questions beside me.

I still missed my children.

Independence did not erase love.

It simply stopped love from being an excuse for humiliation.

Thomas and I met twice more.

He reviewed account permissions, trust provisions, property protections, and my existing will. We removed access that no longer made sense and created clearer safeguards around my finances.

Then he asked whether I wanted to change my beneficiaries.

I stared at the three familiar names.

Jennifer.

Michael.

Lisa.

"I don't know."

"You don't have to decide today."

"What would Richard do?"

Thomas leaned back.

"Richard isn't the client sitting in front of me."

"I know."

"Do you?"

I gave him a tired smile.

"Apparently everyone has decided to ask me that lately."

"Perhaps because you spent forty years making decisions around everyone else."

I looked again at the page.

"Prepare the amendment."

"Removing them?"

"Changing the distribution."

"To what?"

"I need time."

He nodded.

"I'll draft options."

December arrived.

I bought a Christmas tree despite telling myself I wouldn't bother.

It was the same old artificial tree Richard and I had used for nearly twenty years, crooked at the top and missing several branches on one side. Richard used to insist the defects gave it personality.

I put it beside the living-room window.

Then I invited Evelyn for Christmas dinner.

She accepted immediately.

That simple yes meant more than I expected.

On December twenty-third, shortly after noon, the gate camera alerted my phone.

Three vehicles had stopped outside.

I looked at the screen.

Jennifer stepped from the first.

Michael climbed out of his truck.

Lisa emerged from a dark SUV.

My heart began pounding before my mind caught up.

Then doors opened behind them.

Spouses.

Children.

My grandchildren.

They had all come.

For one dangerous second, joy erased everything.

I nearly pressed the gate release.

Then Michael walked directly to the keypad.

He entered the old code.

Red light.

He frowned and tried again.

Red.

Jennifer said something I couldn't hear.

Michael jabbed the numbers a third time.

Denied.

I remained in the kitchen, watching through the security monitor.

Nobody had called to say they were coming.

Nobody had asked whether I had plans.

They had simply arrived as though three months of silence could be erased by appearing with luggage two days before Christmas.

Michael pressed the intercom.

I didn't answer.

He pressed again.

Then Jennifer called my phone.

I let it ring.

A message appeared.

Mom, we're outside.

Another followed.

Open the gate.

Not hello.

Not Merry Christmas.

Open the gate.

Michael stepped away from the keypad and looked up toward the camera.

Then he did something I never expected.

He put one foot on the stone base beside the gate and reached for the top rail.

I immediately pressed the intercom.

"Michael."

He froze.

"Get down."

He looked straight toward the camera.

"Mom? What the hell?"

"Get off my gate."

"This code isn't working."

"I know."

"You changed it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

I almost smiled at the question.

"Because it's my gate."

Jennifer approached the intercom.

"Mom, stop this. It's freezing out here."

"I didn't invite you."

Her face changed.

"We're your family."

"And?"

"And it's Christmas."

"I know what day it is."

Behind them, my grandchildren were watching.

That hurt.

Jennifer knew it would.

She lowered her voice.

"The kids came to see Grandma."

I closed my eyes briefly.

I loved those children.

That had always been the easiest way to move me.

But loving them did not require surrendering control of my home to their parents.

"I'd be happy to arrange a visit with the grandchildren."

Jennifer stared at the camera.

"Arrange a visit? They're standing outside."

"Because you brought them without asking."

Michael moved closer.

"This is insane."

"No. Trying to climb someone's locked gate is insane."

"It's my childhood home."

"It was."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you grew up here. You don't own it."

Lisa finally approached.

"Mom, can we just come inside and talk?"

"No."

Her expression tightened with genuine surprise.

"No?"

"No."

"After we drove all this way?"

"I didn't ask you to drive here."

Jennifer folded her arms.

"You're punishing us."

I almost admired how predictable the accusation had become.

"I changed the code to my own gate. I stopped calling because you asked me to. Which part is punishment?"

Michael leaned toward the intercom.

"We said we were busy."

"You said you had your own lives."

"We do."

"So do I."

Nobody answered.

A gust of wind lifted snow powder along the curb.

Jennifer rubbed her hands together.

"Fine. We're sorry. Can you open the gate now?"

"Sorry for what?"

She blinked.

"What?"

"What are you apologizing for?"

"For upsetting you."

"How?"

"Mom, come on."

"No. Tell me."

Michael muttered, "Jesus."

I heard him.

"You don't have to stay, Michael."

His face hardened.

"We came here because we're worried about you."

"Were you worried when I was in the emergency room?"

"Not this again."

That was the moment something final happened inside me.

I had spent months wondering whether I was being too severe.

Whether loneliness had made me sensitive.

Whether changing the gate code was childish.

Whether meeting Thomas had been an overreaction.

Michael's three words answered all of it.

Not this again.

My fear had become an inconvenience.

My pain had become an old argument they were tired of hearing.

I leaned closer to the intercom microphone.

"I wanted one of you to come when I thought I might be dying."

Lisa looked down.

"I wanted somebody to sit beside me."

Jennifer's jaw tightened.

"I wanted visits that happened because you missed me."

Michael shook his head.

"We've been over this."

"No. I've been over it. Alone."

He stepped closer.

"What do you want from us?"

I stared at my son.

"I want you to understand that I'm a person in your lives, not a responsibility you postpone."

Nobody spoke.

"And I'm not an inheritance waiting for you to collect."

The effect was immediate.

Jennifer's eyes shifted toward Michael.

Lisa stopped looking at the ground.

Michael's expression changed from annoyance to calculation.

Jennifer recovered first.

"So that's what this is about."

"What?"

"Money."

I gave a small laugh.

"You haven't called me for three months. You arrive without warning, try an old security code, and climb my gate. But I'm making this about money?"

"We're worried you're making impulsive decisions."

"What decisions?"

Another silence.

That interested me.

"What decisions, Jennifer?"

She glanced toward Michael.

He answered instead.

"Estate stuff."

The cold seemed to move through the monitor.

"How would you know anything about my estate?"

"We know you've been seeing Thomas."

I went completely still.

"How?"

Michael hesitated.

Jennifer spoke too quickly.

"Denver isn't that big."

Thomas's office was downtown.

My children lived in different parts of the city.

There was no reasonable way all three should know about my private meetings with my attorney unless someone had been paying attention.

"Who told you?"

"Nobody."

"Then how do you know?"

Lisa looked frightened now.

Not cold.

Frightened.

"Mom, please. Just let us inside."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I'm suddenly very interested in why the three of you know about meetings I never mentioned."

Michael's temper surfaced.

"We're your children. We have a right to know what's happening."

"No, you don't."

"Yes, we do."

"No."

His hand struck the gate.

The metallic bang echoed through the speaker.

My grandchildren flinched.

That ended the conversation.

"Leave."

Jennifer stared at the camera.

"Mom."

"Take the children somewhere warm and leave my property."

"You can't shut us out."

"I can refuse entry to my house."

"We're family."

"Family doesn't require breaking through locked gates."

Michael pointed toward the camera.

"You're going to regret this."

My chest tightened.

Not because I believed him.

Because even then, he couldn't say what I had waited months to hear.

I miss you.

I'm sorry.

I love you.

Instead, he offered regret like a threat.

"Goodbye, Michael."

I turned off the intercom.

They remained outside another twenty minutes.

Jennifer made calls.

Lisa paced near her SUV.

Michael kicked at a ridge of snow beside the driveway.

Eventually they returned to their vehicles.

I watched three cars disappear down the street.

Only then did my hands begin shaking.

I sat at the kitchen table.

The Christmas tree glowed in the next room.

My phone rang.

Thomas Brennan.

I answered.

"They came."

"I assumed they might."

"All three."

"Did you let them in?"

"No."

"Good."

"They knew I've been meeting with you."

Thomas went silent.

"Thomas?"

"Exactly what did they say?"

I told him.

When I finished, I heard paper moving on his end.

"Margaret, tomorrow morning I need to show you something."

"What?"

"The changes we've been making aren't the only relevant documents."

"I don't understand."

"Do you remember the property arrangement Richard established?"

"Of course."

"There were conditions attached to what your children could eventually receive."

I sat straighter.

"What conditions?"

"Care of the surviving spouse. No coercion. No financial exploitation. No attempts to pressure you over the house."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Richard did that?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"I think he hoped it would never matter."

The room suddenly felt colder.

"What else aren't you telling me?"

Thomas was quiet long enough that I knew there was something.

"While reviewing the old estate files, I found a folder that wasn't indexed properly."

"What was in it?"

"A letter."

"From whom?"

"Richard."

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"To me?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"It appears to have been written roughly six months before he died."

I looked at the tree Richard and I had decorated together year after year.

"What does it say?"

"I'd rather bring it to you."

"Thomas."

"Tomorrow morning."

"Why can't you tell me now?"

"Because there are some things you should see in his handwriting."

He paused.

"And because the letter suggests Richard was worried about exactly what happened at your gate today."

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Richard Left Me a Warning About Our Children, but the Bank Records Beside It Revealed Something He Had Never Explained

The first month without my children was miserable.
