cash Daniel later gave him.

Russell kept none of it.

He sent some to Rebecca.

Used the rest to pay a man to help her leave.

That was why the amount in Mama’s restitution tin included part of Russell’s later repayments.

He had been trying to replace those twelve thousand dollars for decades.

Not successfully.

Not fully.

But deliberately.

The next morning Rebecca called him.

She had received a copy of the photograph through investigators.

“You were there,” Russell before he stole yours again.

I stared.

Blunt.

Accurate.

She explained Russell’s involvement in the attempted theft of her settlement.

Then the burning of the papers.

Their relationship.

Anna.

Wayne’s threat.

And the 1972 transfer from my residual settlement.

She knew.

Russell told I loved him for refusing to do it to me. Both were true and neither canceled the other.

Thomas would have approved of that sentence.

Then:

If you ever find out, don’t let anyone tell you I needed your money more than you did. That would make the theft noble. It wasn’t.

I swallowed.

She understood exactly.

Russell acted under threat.

He also stole from me.

Both true.

Then her final paragraph.

I used part of what Russell sent to get away. I’m sorry.

Another debt.

Another person who meant to repair.

Too late.

Rebecca Anne said her mother left a savings bond with the letter.

Value in 1992?

Two thousand dollars.

She had never cashed it.

Still existed.

“What do you want to do?” I asked.

Rebecca said, “Give it back.”

“To me?”

“Yes.”

I thought about the flour tin.

Every returned debt.

Every delayed repayment.

Every person trying to push money backward through time.

“No.”

Silence.

Rebecca sounded surprised.

“No?”

“Keep it.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother already spent her life paying for enough.”

“That money came from yours.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re choosing?”

“Yes.”

For once, restitution did not require return.

Because I decided.

Not because someone else hid the choice.

Rebecca became quiet.

Then said, “Thank you.”

I looked at Russell.

He was crying.

Not because I forgave him.

I had not said that.

Because one piece of the debt stopped moving.

Not erased.

Stopped.

Later that day, Ruiz brought the next Florida archive report.

One negative remained unaccounted for.

The inventory label read:

Evelyn / Daniel / Agreement / 1974.

1974.

The year Mama forced my insurance policy and Russell’s canceled.

The year she apparently confronted Daniel successfully.

A photograph of their agreement might show what leverage she used.

Jonas’s note said:

Original held by E.H.
