They scan envelopes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Modern life had defeated his expectation of days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca said, \u201cMy mother loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked shocked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca did not smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also said you were a coward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you were trying not to be one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was kinder than I deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not calling to forgive you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if I want a relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have two children. You don\u2019t get to arrive as Grandpa because you wrote one decent letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each answer became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Rebecca said, \u201cBut I\u2019m willing to write back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Some moments did not need witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, Rebecca asked to speak privately with me.<\/p>\n<p>Russell left.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cGrandma Evelyn left something with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA sealed packet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstructions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen after she dies, but only if you contact me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mama again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the outer envelope on camera.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a letter and a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca read silently first.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the page toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had written:<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca, if Linda reaches you, give her the photograph. It is the last proof I have that Wayne knew Samuel\u2019s trust still existed.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed Wayne standing beside Peter Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Much younger.<\/p>\n<p>Date written on back:<\/p>\n<p>1998.<\/p>\n<p>One year before Wayne died.<\/p>\n<p>They knew each other.<\/p>\n<p>Peter had not inherited this problem only from Jonas after Wayne\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>He had worked with Wayne while Wayne was alive.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca turned over a second sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Mama wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Peter came to Wayne for the Lane trust termination papers.
