Hollis.<\/p>\n<p>Termination instrument held pending beneficiary signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Lane.<\/p>\n<p>Mama.<\/p>\n<p>My heart pounded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Daniel couldn\u2019t legally terminate the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot through this instrument.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter needed Mama\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible now.<\/p>\n<p>Unless&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Forgery.<\/p>\n<p>The entire scheme had used forged signatures before.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe an old signed document could be repurposed.<\/p>\n<p>Why steal the fair photograph?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Mama\u2019s signature was hidden with Samuel\u2019s papers.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Officers had found Peter\u2019s rental car.<\/p>\n<p>Abandoned at the cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>We drove there.<\/p>\n<p>The grave cavity where Daniel\u2019s insurance ledger had been found was open.<\/p>\n<p>Police tape moved in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>Peter had returned.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>The ledger was gone into evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing remained.<\/p>\n<p>Or so we thought.<\/p>\n<p>An officer pointed to the back of Samuel\u2019s headstone.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh scrape marks.<\/p>\n<p>Peter had removed a second stone panel beneath the first cavity.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had noticed it.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was another compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Something had been there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>Mama never used one hiding place when two would do.<\/p>\n<p>We searched photographs from when the first container was removed.<\/p>\n<p>A faint outline.<\/p>\n<p>Another box deeper inside.<\/p>\n<p>Peter had found it because Jonas must have known.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed something scratched into the interior stone.<\/p>\n<p>Not Mama\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>L + E.<\/p>\n<p>Linda and Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Below it:<\/p>\n<p>Only both can end it.<\/p>\n<p>Carol understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe Samuel required both beneficiaries to terminate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mama and me.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel could forge Mama.<\/p>\n<p>But he could not forge me as an adult until later.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that was why my eighteenth birthday mattered.<\/p>\n<p>My settlement and the Meridian trust may have converged.<\/p>\n<p>Peter could possess documents allowing him to fabricate termination.<\/p>\n<p>But he still needed something else.<\/p>\n<p>My signature.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz immediately assigned an officer to stay near me.<\/p>\n<p>I almost objected.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>This was not protection through ignorance.<\/p>\n<p>This was protection with my consent.<\/p>\n<p>A difference.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I answered on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Mercer\u2019s voice was smooth.<\/p>\n<p>Younger than Michael\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared toward Samuel\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo have you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you take?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething your mother should have destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol looked at me sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Peter continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed plenty of papers at eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The forged settlement transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Copies.<\/p>\n<p>Samples.<\/p>\n<p>He had old versions of my signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you trying to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect an old ownership problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepends which lawyer you pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Peter laughed quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assume police are listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne original document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Blue Orchard partnership agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>I answered, \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause copies create arguments. Originals create ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole the original from Mama\u2019s frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you steal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the original partnership agreement is visible in the reflection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel was holding it when he took the bank photograph. Window reflection caught enough of the first page to prove a version existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you don\u2019t have the agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you think we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blue Orchard.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s box.<\/p>\n<p>We had documents.<\/p>\n<p>Was the original partnership agreement there?<\/p>\n<p>I could not remember.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz did.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote on a pad and turned it toward me.<\/p>\n<p>YES.<\/p>\n<p>Peter wanted it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do I get?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz frowned.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>Peter said, \u201cTruth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot about Wayne\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The air changed.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne died in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>Or so I believed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was holding his medication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have Jonas\u2019s statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mama kill Wayne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter did not answer directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring the agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not meeting him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember the doorway at Mama\u2019s house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to prove anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not proving anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m finding out why Peter thinks a twenty-seven-year-old death gives him leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said calmly, \u201cAnd we will investigate without trading evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That was fair.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n<p>Mama may have had one final secret involving Wayne\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Peter believed it could frighten me.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it would.<\/p>\n<p>But after everything Mama had left behind, one thing had changed.<\/p>\n<p>I no longer feared truth simply because someone else hoped I would.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26750\">Click here to continue reading: PART 23: Jonas Mercer\u2019s Statement Accused Mama in Wayne\u2019s Death, but the Hospital Records Showed Peter Had Built His Threat Around Half the Truth<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We drove back immediately.
