I burned it.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Why burn it?<\/p>\n<p>Margaret explained.<\/p>\n<p>She panicked.<\/p>\n<p>The letter made everything real.<\/p>\n<p>If Daniel found it, Michael would be in danger.<\/p>\n<p>If Michael read it, he would search for Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>So she burned it.<\/p>\n<p>Her remorse filled three pages.<\/p>\n<p>Michael sat very still.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had written to him.<\/p>\n<p>A letter existed.<\/p>\n<p>And his mother destroyed it.<\/p>\n<p>No recovery.<\/p>\n<p>No clever trail.<\/p>\n<p>Some truths really were lost.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret wrote one final line beneath that entry.<\/p>\n<p>I memorized the first sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sentence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I read it.<\/p>\n<p>My son, if you ever learn my name, know first that I wanted you before I was allowed to know you.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah began crying silently.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s first sentence survived in Margaret\u2019s memory.<\/p>\n<p>Only one.<\/p>\n<p>But it was enough to change the room.<\/p>\n<p>Michael pressed his hand against his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>No one rushed him.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually he whispered, \u201cHe wanted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah said, \u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Not as proof.<\/p>\n<p>As something he was choosing to accept for now.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz opened the first envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Addressed to Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Dated 2002.<\/p>\n<p>It was written after the tape.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret told Mama she had removed six pages from Daniel\u2019s red book because they contained information about Sarah and Michael.<\/p>\n<p>She feared the wrong person finding them.<\/p>\n<p>She planned to give them to Michael only if Thomas\u2019s identity ever surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Then came J.M.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret finally wrote the full name.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy uncle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s younger brother.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered no Jonas.<\/p>\n<p>Michael did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe moved to Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDied 2010.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah asked, \u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked disturbed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>That fit.<\/p>\n<p>Mechanical access?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>But Daniel\u2019s brother would have had deep access to records.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret wrote that Jonas sometimes carried out interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Not killings, she claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence theft.<\/p>\n<p>But she suspected more.<\/p>\n<p>He was the J.M. in Daniel\u2019s ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Another family branch tied in.<\/p>\n<p>Then she wrote something worse.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas had a son.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy cousin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s attention sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida, last I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>A living descendant of Daniel\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p>Not proof of guilt.<\/p>\n<p>But Margaret had written:<\/p>\n<p>Peter knows too much because Jonas trained him to preserve the family files.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz said immediately, \u201cThat does not mean Peter committed any crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the timing mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan said not everyone connected to the records was dead.<\/p>\n<p>We assumed Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Then Calvin.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he meant Peter too.<\/p>\n<p>The second envelope was addressed to Michael.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it himself.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret apologized.<\/p>\n<p>Not broadly.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically.<\/p>\n<p>For lying about Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>For burning Thomas\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>For keeping Daniel\u2019s suspicions hidden.<\/p>\n<p>For allowing Michael to spend years studying the wrong father.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>I thought truth would destroy you. I see now that secrecy did more damage because it let other people choose your story.<\/p>\n<p>I felt that sentence deeply.<\/p>\n<p>So did Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret ended with a warning.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas kept copies of Daniel\u2019s files after his death.<\/p>\n<p>Peter inherited them.<\/p>\n<p>If Peter ever learns Evelyn has begun exposing the past, he may try to retrieve what he believes belongs to the Mercer family.<\/p>\n<p>The wording bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelongs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Family property.<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked toward Ruiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter called me after Mom died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2002.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the room froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told him no?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know what was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Daniel\u2019s old business records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never thought that mattered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at me sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know any of this then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stopped asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor twenty-four years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked, \u201cAny recent contact?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirthday message last month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything since Evelyn died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz requested his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Michael handed it over.<\/p>\n<p>No argument.<\/p>\n<p>She began documenting Peter\u2019s contact information.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah picked up one of the photographs from Margaret\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The picture showed four men outside a fishing cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>And Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Margaret had written:<\/p>\n<p>The four who always knew.<\/p>\n<p>Below that, added later:<\/p>\n<p>And Peter knows where their copies are.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked at Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere does Peter live now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael gave an address near Tampa.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz contacted Florida authorities.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside the open case.<\/p>\n<p>The six missing pages no longer felt like an ending.<\/p>\n<p>They were another bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Mama\u2019s trail.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s trail.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s letters.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s ledgers.<\/p>\n<p>Every secret had been preserved by someone who believed time might eventually make truth safer.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it did.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it only made witnesses older.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Mercer\u2019s house was empty.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors said he left three days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Before Mama\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>Before I opened the flour tin.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow would he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked toward Margaret\u2019s warning.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz listened further.<\/p>\n<p>Peter\u2019s vehicle had been recorded crossing into Tennessee yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>While we were searching Millbrook.<\/p>\n<p>While Michael walked into Unit 317.<\/p>\n<p>While Nolan followed us.<\/p>\n<p>Another person had been moving through the same map.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ruiz asked one question.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter\u2019s car was captured this morning in your hometown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear Evelyn\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26749\">Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Peter Mercer Reached Mama\u2019s House Before Police Identified Him, and the Only Thing Missing Was a Photograph I Had Dismissed as Worthless<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael\u2019s house was quieter than I expected.
