Evelyn suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>W.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>I read the sentence again.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine whispered, \u201cOh God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Michael said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came here for the tape because Margaret knew whether Wayne killed my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His silence confirmed it.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the cassette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you care if I know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause my mother helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was quieter than everything before it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe helped Wayne kill Samuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave Wayne Samuel\u2019s schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Russell muttered a curse.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stared at the cassette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe worked in Daniel\u2019s office sometimes. She knew when Samuel planned to meet Thomas. She knew which road he used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something hollow open inside my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know what Wayne intended?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you believe her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes lifted to mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first time he had sounded like a son instead of a threat.<\/p>\n<p>I understood the exhaustion now.<\/p>\n<p>He had spent years living beside a dead woman\u2019s confession.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhy protect her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she was my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t answer anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt answers too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol\u2019s voice came through the phone again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had almost forgotten her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the storage entrance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael spun toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave them the facility address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swore.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine looked relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Russell did not.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stepped toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf police hear it before you do\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop deciding what I should know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>Those words had followed me all day.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe all my life.<\/p>\n<p>I held the cassette against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou all keep calling secrecy protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t when you did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t when your father did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t when Margaret did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it wasn\u2019t when Carol did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol\u2019s voice came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sirens sounded in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Michael closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, he looked afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Not of prison.<\/p>\n<p>Of exposure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else is on the tape?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He opened his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother said Evelyn knew who drove the truck that hit you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sirens grew louder.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already know there was a driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know he couldn\u2019t stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know why he was on that road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in Russell\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Michael saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell whispered, \u201cNot for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was driving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s answer came just as red lights flashed across the storage buildings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Avery\u2019s younger brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26737\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Driver Who Hit Me Had Been Searching for Thomas Avery, and Mama\u2019s Cassette Revealed Why Wayne Needed Me Silenced That Day<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For one second, nobody moved.
