Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother believed they were payments for silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Wayne pushing me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>There was a photocopy of a police report from my accident.<\/p>\n<p>One section had been marked in red pencil.<\/p>\n<p>Witness statement.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, no witness saw me enter the road.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Wayne had told police he watched me step directly into traffic.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Russell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy aren\u2019t you in this report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne sent me home before the police finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you let him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that like fear expires into innocence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine opened another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photograph of the road where I had been hit.<\/p>\n<p>The image had been taken shortly after the accident.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, Mama had written:<\/p>\n<p>Wayne said Linda was standing beside him.<\/p>\n<p>I studied the picture.<\/p>\n<p>A shallow drainage ditch separated the shoulder from the place where Wayne claimed he had stood.<\/p>\n<p>If his statement were true, he should have been beside me.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, another photograph showed scuff marks farther back near the edge of the ditch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat am I looking at?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother spent years reconstructing what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause eventually she stopped believing Wayne\u2019s story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe suspected. Knowing and proving are different things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew what he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Russell said. \u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His admission quieted the room.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me everything now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more Memphis. No more tomorrow. No more protecting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his palms together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Wayne argued with the truck driver the night before your accident, I heard them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t understand then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked toward Elaine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater I learned Wayne was involved in something with Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were moving money through accounts that didn\u2019t belong to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose accounts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who were injured. People who got settlements. Sometimes elderly clients. Sometimes families who didn\u2019t understand the paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel was using this firm?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Linda\u2019s accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy was my accident connected?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell pressed both hands against the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Wayne needed money quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why push me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the push. I didn\u2019t hear everything that happened before it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and Wayne were arguing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memory came as sensation before image.<\/p>\n<p>Heat.<\/p>\n<p>Dust.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne\u2019s fingers around my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Something surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>I was seventeen.<\/p>\n<p>Angry.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne had told me to get into the car.<\/p>\n<p>I had refused.<\/p>\n<p>There was another man nearby.<\/p>\n<p>A truck approaching.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne\u2019s hand against my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Then nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe grabbed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou pulled away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe shoved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToward the road?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn purpose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine sat completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the driver?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe couldn\u2019t stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Wayne intend for the truck to hit me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my brother.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I believed that particular answer.<\/p>\n<p>Russell knew plenty.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps nobody except Wayne had known exactly what Wayne intended.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to the box.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the police documents was a small black notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Most pages contained numbers and initials.<\/p>\n<p>Near the back, Mama had written a list of dates.<\/p>\n<p>One matched my accident.<\/p>\n<p>Another matched the day my settlement arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Another matched my eighteenth birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The final entry was recent.<\/p>\n<p>Six months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Beside it she had written:<\/p>\n<p>Gave Russell the key.
