She can leave without me trying to punish, manipulate, or financially trap her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something shift.<\/p>\n<p>The therapist looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd can he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That question surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had spent so long thinking of Mark as the one asking.<\/p>\n<p>But choice had to run both directions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout becoming proof he never changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>That was harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s eyes softened.<\/p>\n<p>The therapist leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen perhaps the question is not whether you can guarantee the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether the relationship you have now is one both of you freely choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>He did not reach for me.<\/p>\n<p>Did not answer first.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cDo you choose it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Then he corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, with the conditions we have now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Better.<\/p>\n<p>Separate homes.<\/p>\n<p>Therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Financial independence.<\/p>\n<p>No hidden access.<\/p>\n<p>No assumed authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down.<\/p>\n<p>The answer was there.<\/p>\n<p>Not forever.<\/p>\n<p>Not guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>But now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI choose what we have now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not turn that into more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The therapist smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you have an answer for today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, in the parking lot, Mark stood beside my car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I ask something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I take you on a date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already have dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the difference?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to plan something intentionally romantic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I say no?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile appeared slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFriday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I pick you up?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A flicker of disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeet there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned forward slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I kiss you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kissed him first.<\/p>\n<p>That surprised both of us.<\/p>\n<p>When I drove away, I did not feel like I had forgiven the past.<\/p>\n<p>Forgiveness was not a door that erased the room behind it.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something quieter.<\/p>\n<p>I had stopped letting the past make every future decision.<\/p>\n<p>That was not forgetting.<\/p>\n<p>It was choosing.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26652\">Click here to continue reading: PART 35: Two Years After Mark Quit His Job for an Inheritance He Could Never Control, I Finally Understood What Dad Had Actually Left Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Evan asked during breakfast at the cabin.
