ask.”

“Yes.”

“What does David think?”

“He thinks it is defensible and financially painful.”

“Sounds like David.”

“He also told me not to make a morality play out of every asset.”

“I like him.”

“He likes you too much.”

“That is because I pay my bills.”

Mark laughed.

The court eventually approved the distribution.

Most went to remaining restitution.

A portion to Dad’s estate under the old loan claim.

Mark received nothing from the asset.

He did not bring it up again.

That mattered more than the waiver.

Three weeks later, Dad’s estate received its final payment from Mark.

Not the entire original debt through his monthly payments alone.

Between insurance proceeds, restitution allocation, recovered assets, and direct repayment, the balance reached zero under the trust amendment’s terms.

Samuel called me.

“The ledger is closed.”

I stared at Dad’s old notebook.

“Closed?”

“Principal satisfied.”

“Interest?”

“Forgiven under Walter’s amendment.”

I swallowed.

Dad had written the condition before he died.

Repay principal within five years and interest would be forgiven.

Mark had done it in less than two.

“What happens now?”

“Nothing.”

I almost laughed.

“Nothing?”

“That is what paid debts do.”

The simplicity felt enormous.

“Send Mark confirmation.”

“Already prepared.”

“Good.”

That evening, Mark arrived for our scheduled dinner.

I handed him Samuel’s envelope.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

He did.

Read.

His face went still.

Then he sat down.

“Zero.”

“Yes.”

He read it again.

“I owed him almost half a million dollars.”

“Yes.”

“And now it says zero.”

“Yes.”

His eyes filled.

“I thought this would feel better.”

“What does it feel like?”

“Like he’s really gone.”

I understood immediately.

Debt had been another thread to Dad.

Unhealthy origin.

Legal obligation.

Still a thread.

Now severed.

“He is.”

Mark wiped his face.

“I’m sorry.”

“For crying?”

“For everything.”

I sat beside him.

“You do not need to apologize to me every time you miss him.”

“I’m apologizing to him.”

“Then that is between you and Dad.”

He laughed through tears.

“Not very practical.”

“No.”

We sat quietly.

After a while, Mark folded the payoff statement and returned it to the envelope.

“Can I keep this?”

“It is yours.”

He held it against his knee.

“Walter forgave the interest.”

“Yes.”

“Because I met the condition.”

“Yes.”

“That feels different from forgiveness.”

“How?”

“He didn’t pretend the debt never existed.”

Exactly.

“He created a way through it,” I said.

Mark nodded.

“Accountability first.”

Dad’s old line.

Forgiveness before accountability is not kindness.

I looked at Mark.

Maybe Dad had not known exactly what our ending would be.

Maybe none of us did.

But the debt was finished.

The marriage was not.

And for once, unfinished did not mean hidden.

Click here to continue reading: PART 34: When Evan Asked Whether Mark and I Were Getting Back
