Dad’s loans.

Diane insisted on repaying twelve.

Samuel created a formal payment arrangement.

No cash.

No private transfer.

No shame.

Just accounting.

When Mark learned, he called his mother.

I heard about it later from Diane.

“He told me not to repay.”

“What did you say?”

“I told him he no longer gets to make that decision for me.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

“He apologized.”

“For the source?”

“For making me part of something without asking.”

That was the correct apology.

Diane laughed.

“I think we are all learning your father’s lesson late.”

“Which one?”

“Ask before you use what belongs to someone else.”

Simple.

Almost embarrassingly simple.

The next week, the Marianne Hail Memorial Trust recovered its claim.

Not thirty thousand.

One hundred four thousand.

Appreciation from the property traced to misappropriated funds increased the recovery substantially.

Samuel called with the final figure.

“Walter would have enjoyed this.”

“What?”

“Being right financially for the wrong reason.”

I laughed.

“What happens now?”

“The money returns to the Skills Fund.”

“How many grants?”

“Depending on size, perhaps fifteen to twenty additional awards.”

My throat tightened.

Money taken without permission was returning as education.

Not because theft became acceptable.

Because recovery could still be used well.

I asked Samuel to add one condition.

“No naming anything after Dad beyond what already exists.”

He laughed.

“Walter would appreciate that.”

“And no press release.”

“Understood.”

“Just grants.”

“Yes.”

Later that evening, Mark called.

“Samuel told me about the trust recovery.”

“Yes.”

“One hundred four.”

“Yes.”

“I still can’t believe the bad transfer made money.”

“Do not romanticize it.”

“I’m not.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

“I can hear Walter saying exactly that.”

Then he became quiet.

“I wish I had asked.”

“Asked what?”

“Him.”

“About investing the trust money?”

“Yes.”

“What do you think he would have said?”

“No.”

I smiled.

“Probably.”

“And then explained for forty minutes.”

“Definitely.”

Mark sighed.

“It would have been so much easier.”

That was the tragedy beneath everything.

Permission might have been denied.

Truth might have caused arguments.

Limits might have slowed ambition.

But none of those would have cost what secrecy did.

“Most of this could have been prevented by asking,” I said.

“I know.”

“Not by smarter investing.”

“I know.”

“Not by better timing.”

“I know.”

“By asking.”

“Yes.”

He was quiet.

Then:

“Can I ask you something now?”

I almost laughed.

“Go ahead.”

“Would you be willing to have dinner with me next week?”

There it was.

A request.

Not assumption.

Not pressure.

“Why?”

“Because I miss you.”

Honest.

“And?”

“I want to spend time with you.”

“Any agenda?”

“No.”

“Marriage conversation?”

“Only if you bring it up.”

“Evan?”

“Not unless it comes up naturally.”

“Money?”

“Absolutely not.”

I smiled despite myself.

“One dinner.”

“One.”

“I’m not promising anything.”

“I know.”

“Wednesday?”

“Wednesday.”

When we ended the call, I sat in Dad’s kitchen with an unfamiliar feeling.

Not reconciliation.

Possibility.

That was more dangerous in some ways.

Anger had clear edges.

Possibility required judgment.

And Dad had spent his final months trying to return that judgment to me.

I would use it slowly.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Our First Dinner
