A financial planner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re telling me not to immediately repay a debt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you to stop using dramatic gestures as financial planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We discussed the house.<\/p>\n<p>Our house.<\/p>\n<p>The one still jointly owned.<\/p>\n<p>I had not lived there in weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had moved to the apartment voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>The house sat mostly empty.<\/p>\n<p>Mortgage manageable.<\/p>\n<p>Home-equity line toxic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want to do with it?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer surprised me by arriving so easily.<\/p>\n<p>Mark absorbed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo fight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expected one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t afford it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked sad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved that kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe redid it twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time was enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hated the tile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked like a restaurant bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The memory did not hurt as much as I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Selling a house did not erase years.<\/p>\n<p>It simply stopped requiring the building to carry them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll use proceeds to satisfy the home-equity line first,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen divide remaining equity according to legal advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo creative accounting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>He did too.<\/p>\n<p>When I stood to leave, Mark walked me to the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we separated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean formally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo paperwork yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question came without panic.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a separation agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>But he nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial boundaries. Responsibility. House sale. Debt allocation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily divorce papers yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hope flickered.<\/p>\n<p>I raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not turn that into a promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you accept separation without treating it as a countdown to getting me back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took a long breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>He corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Commitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I left.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Samuel and David began drafting.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in fourteen years, Mark and I were going to put financial boundaries into writing.<\/p>\n<p>Not because marriage had failed entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Because assumptions had.<\/p>\n<p>A week later, the house went on the market.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the empty living room before the photographer arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding picture was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Furniture reduced.<\/p>\n<p>Echoes everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Mark came to collect a final box.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you regret buying it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had good years here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd bad ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to make the whole thing bad to leave it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to surprise both of us.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Priya.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestigators have reached preliminary charging decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone on speaker at his request.<\/p>\n<p>Priya continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric is expected to face multiple counts involving fraud, false statements, and misuse of investor funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mark?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Priya\u2019s pause felt enormous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProsecutors are considering a negotiated resolution based on cooperation, restitution, and his documented role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could mean criminal charges with a plea agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJail?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The empty house seemed suddenly colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo early to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark opened his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>No denial.<\/p>\n<p>No anger.<\/p>\n<p>Just fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Priya continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis cooperation and the distinction between his conduct and Eric\u2019s personal extraction matter. But the unauthorized transfers, false investor representations, and other conduct are serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark nodded though she could not see him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the call ended, we sat in the empty living room.<\/p>\n<p>The house we were selling.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage we were separating.<\/p>\n<p>The legal consequences finally reaching him.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might go to prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought saying it would sound dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you scared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised him.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can care what happens to you without trying to prevent it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Evan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to tell Allison before rumors reach her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Evan carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the part I\u2019m afraid of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just found me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now I might disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrison would be disappearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this time you tell him where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>The difference landed.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen years ago, Mark disappeared through avoidance.<\/p>\n<p>If legal consequences took him away now, honesty could at least leave a bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Calls.<\/p>\n<p>Truth.<\/p>\n<p>Presence within limits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t vanish if people know where you stand,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Mark cried quietly in the empty room.<\/p>\n<p>I let him.<\/p>\n<p>No fixing.<\/p>\n<p>No promises.<\/p>\n<p>No attempt to tell him it would be okay.<\/p>\n<p>Some moments deserved reality unsoftened.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time in his life, I think Mark understood that being afraid of a consequence did not make it less deserved, and loving the people affected did not give him the right to escape it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26642\">Click here to continue reading: PART 25: Mark Told Evan About the Possible Plea Deal, and the Boy\u2019s Response Forced Every Adult to Stop Managing His Feelings<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I called Mark before Samuel could tell me not to.
