understood what I was saying.

“What you did after evidence appeared,” I continued, “that’s where responsibility starts.”

Mark sat at the table.

“I ignored things.”

“Yes.”

“I knew invoices were fake.”

“Yes.”

“I knew transfers weren’t authorized.”

“Yes.”

“I just didn’t know he was stealing from me too.”

“That does not make what you did less real.”

“I know.”

Dad’s note lay inside the evidence file now.

Do not let either man use the other as absolution.

I did not need to show it to Mark.

He was beginning to understand it himself.

Then he said something I did not expect.

“I want my North Vale interest liquidated.”

“For what?”

“To repay people.”

“All of them?”

“As much as possible.”

“What about Dad’s estate?”

“That too.”

“What about me?”

“You first.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He looked confused.

“Do not turn repayment into another dramatic rescue.”

“What do you mean?”

“You don’t decide alone who gets paid first because guilt is loudest today.”

He sat back.

“Then what?”

“You let the lawyers and accountants determine legitimate claims.”

He almost smiled.

“That sounds like Walter.”

“It sounds like not improvising with other people’s money.”

“Fair.”

David appeared in the doorway.

“Mark.”

He stood.

Before leaving, he looked at me.

“I’m meeting Evan tomorrow.”

“Good.”

“He wants me to meet Tom again.”

“Also good.”

“I’m more afraid of that than investigators.”

“That may be healthy.”

He nodded.

At the door he stopped.

“Clare.”

“Yes?”

“I used to think making everyone whole meant nobody could really say I’d hurt them.”

I waited.

“I don’t think that anymore.”

Something in my chest loosened.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

“What do you think now?”

“That paying people back is just paying them back.”

“Yes.”

“It doesn’t buy anything else.”

“No.”

He nodded.

Then left.

I watched his car disappear down Dad’s street.

For the first time, Mark was beginning to separate restitution from absolution.

That distinction might save something in him.

Whether it could save anything between us remained a different question entirely.

<a
