Samuel’s conference room looked nothing like a courtroom.

That almost made it more intimidating.

A rectangular table.

Water glasses.

Legal pads.

Two officials from the state financial enforcement division.

Priya.

Samuel.

Nina.

Me.

No dramatic seal behind a judge.

No spectators.

Just facts waiting to be stated accurately.

Before we began, Priya reminded me to answer only what I knew personally and distinguish what came from records.

Dad would have appreciated that.

Precision over performance.

The lead investigator introduced himself as Daniel Ruiz.

His colleague was Marcy Holt, a forensic examiner.

Daniel began with Dad.

“When did Walter first become concerned?”

Samuel answered.

Then Nina described her engagement.

Then I explained how Dad’s records came to me after his death.

Nobody asked about my marriage at first.

That surprised me.

The story felt personal to me because it had destroyed the shape of my private life.

To clarifying.

They did not care whether Mark loved me.

They cared whether he moved money he had no authority to move.

At one point Daniel asked, “Did Mr. Ellison ever tell you that he held a beneficial interest in Ridgeway-related properties?”

“No.”

“North Vale?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize more papers.”

My chest tightened.

“What papers?”

“Referral records.”

“About Ridgeway?”

“Yes.”

“Anything new?”

“One name.”

I waited.

“Dad.”

My heart stopped.

“What what?”

“Walter does not appear to have made a two-hundred-thousand-dollar investment.”

“Then why is his name listed?”

“There is a wire matching the amount, but it did not originate from Walter.”

“Where did it come from?”

Nina paused.

“An account controlled by Eric.”

I capitalized or to create a false investor record.”

“Could that hurt Dad?”

“Potentially, if someone later claimed he was an investor or participant.”

Anger rose immediately.

Eric had used Dad’s name.

Not just his money.

His reputation.

“Did Mark know?”

“I don’t know.”

I called him.

“Did you know Eric listed Dad as a two-hundred-thousand-dollar investor?”

“What?”

The surprise sounded real.

“Melissa found records.”

“No.”

“Think.”

“I never saw that.”

“Did Eric ever mention using Walter’s name?”

“No.”

“Would he?”

Mark swore.

“Eric handled investor schedules.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No. He would not have had permission.”

For once, anger sharpened Mark’s voice for someone other than himself.

“If he used Walter’s that.”

“Clare.”

“What?”

“If Eric fabricated Dad’s investment, there may be other fake entries.”

I went still.

“Why?”

“Because he used investor lists to show prospective investors who else had committed.”

Social proof.

Borrowed credibility.

Dad’s name would have mattered.

Hail Mechanical.

Successful businessman.

Respected locally.

People might invest because Walter Hail supposedly had.

“How many people saw the list?”

“I don’t know.”

“Nina can find out.”

Mark breathed hard.

“I should have checked.”

“Yes.”

“I let Eric control too much.”

“Yes.”

“I trusted him.”

The irony almost hurt.

“Yes.”

Mark went quiet.

Then he said, “This is what I did to you.”

I did not answer.

He continued.

“I kept thinking Eric was handling things because it was easier than looking.”

Exactly.

“Now imagine fifteen years of that.”

“I know.”

“No. You are beginning to.”

He accepted it.

That evening, Eric’s attorney requested an emergency meeting.

Samuel advised me not to attend unless Priya did.

We met by video the next morning.

Eric appeared beside his attorney.

I had not seen him in years.

He looked almost unchanged.

Expensive shirt.

Perfect hair.

Confident posture.

The kind of man who made calmness look like evidence of innocence.

“Clare,” he said.

“Eric.”

He offered condolences for Dad.

I thanked him.

Then Priya said, “Let’s address the investor schedule.”

Eric’s attorney shifted immediately.

“There may be misunderstandings in preliminary accounting drafts.”

Nina responded.

“The schedule was distributed externally.”

Eric looked at her.

“To whom?”

“That is what we are determining.”

He leaned back.

“I don’t remember every document from five years ago.”

I knew that technique now.

Memory as fog.

Priya continued.

“Was Walter Hail an investor in Ridgeway?”

Eric looked at me.

Then at his don’t remember.”

“Did Mark?”

Eric smiled slightly.

“You should ask Mark.”

“We did.”

“And?”

“He denies knowledge.”

The smile changed.

There was history between them now.

Fear.

Resentment.

Mutual leverage unraveling.

Eric said, “Mark approved more than he’s admitting.”

“Do you have evidence?”

“Yes.”

Priya leaned forward.

“Provide it.”

Eric’s attorney interrupted.

“We can discuss document exchange under a broader settlement framework.”

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

“I am not paying for facts with silence.”

Eric’s expression hardened.

“You think Walter would want this?”

I looked at him.

“Dad scheduled a meeting with regulators before he died.”

For the first time, Eric lost control of his face.

Barely.

But enough.

“He what?”

There it was.

He truly had not known.

I continued.

“He decided private fixes were over.”

Eric looked at his lawyer.

The attorney said nothing.

Then Eric turned back to me.

“Clare, it.”

“Then show the records.”

Eric’s jaw tightened.

“You want records?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

He leaned forward.

“I have an email from Mark instructing me to list Walter as an investor.”

The room went still.

I stared at the screen.

“No.”

Eric gave a bitter laugh.

“You still think you know him?”

“I said no because I want to see the email.”

That safer.”

The sentence surprised me.

“I’m done.”

“Do not make another impulsive decision to prove you changed.”

“I’m not.”

“You could create criminal exposure.”

“I already created it.”

“That is not the point.”

“It is to me.”

I walked slowly across Dad’s kitchen.

“What are you going to do?”

“Give David the full archive today.”

“Good.”

“And authorize him to approach the investigators.”

“That is different from dumping files yourself.”

“Yes.”

“You will follow counsel?”

“Yes.”

“Then do that.”

He exhaled.

“Clare.”

“What?”

“I used your dad’s name.”

“I know.”

“I told myself he would help if things went wrong.”

There it was.

Dad as guarantee.

Even without consent.

“Dad spent years helping you.”

“Yes.”

“And somehow you turned that into permission.”

“Yes.”

His voice broke.

“I’m sorry.”

I did not respond.

Some apologies required distance before they could mean anything.

Then Mark said, “Evan wants to see me again Saturday.”

I closed my eyes.

Two realities.

Legal exposure.

A son.

Life never arranged consequences one at a time.

“Then see him.”

“What do I tell him if things get worse?”

“The truth appropriate to his age.”

“What if I’m charged with something?”

The word charged landed heavily.

“Then you tell him that too.”

“He’ll hate me.”

“Maybe.”

“I don’t want him to think this is who I am.”

I looked at Dad’s final letter.

“Then become someone whose next choices tell a different story.”

Mark was silent.

That was all I could give him.

Not absolution.

Not reassurance.

The chance to choose differently while consequences remained real.

That afternoon, David Chen contacted Samuel.

Mark had delivered the archive.

Thousands of pages.

Emails.

Spreadsheets.

Side agreements.

Property records.

Internal notes.

One folder was labeled simply:

IF ERIC TURNS.

The ugliness of the name almost made me laugh.

Insurance, exactly as Mark said.

But hidden inside that folder was something neither side expected.

A spreadsheet of every investor loss Mark had calculated privately.

Names.

Amounts.

Dates.

Estimated repayment needs.

At the bottom was a total.

$1,184,000.

Next to it, Mark had written a note five years earlier.

Need to make all whole before anyone finds out.

Five years.

He had known the scale.

He had understood people were owed.

And still he kept going.

Samuel read the note aloud.

I stared at the total.

More than a million dollars.

Not because one deal failed.

Because Mark and Eric repeatedly moved money hoping future success would erase prior decisions.

Dad’s final warning echoed.

Consequences are real when another person refuses to carry them.

Now eleven investors, my father’s estate, me, Allison, Evan, Melissa, and perhaps regulators were all refusing.

The entire system Mark had built around delayed consequences was collapsing at once.

And this time, there was no one left to absorb the fall.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Mark’s
