The other maybe fifty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>This would reach her too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Melissa know now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe deserves to hear from you before investigators do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a softened version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going there after this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he left, I watched from Dad\u2019s window.<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders looked heavier than they had when he arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Consequences, Dad had written, become real when another person refuses to carry them.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered whether this was what real change looked like at first.<\/p>\n<p>Not redemption.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Just a person finally carrying what belonged to him.<\/p>\n<p>That evening Melissa called me.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook with anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took fifteen thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed it was referral money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was referral money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat part may be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo people lost money because I introduced them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have asked more questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood that feeling too well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd tell them what I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark said there may be an investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you the one reporting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think so?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m furious with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice steadied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut those people trusted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Trust again.<\/p>\n<p>Not money.<\/p>\n<p>The real currency underneath everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll help however I can,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if it costs you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>After we ended the call, Samuel emailed confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator would meet with us Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Nina would attend.<\/p>\n<p>Priya would attend.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the date.<\/p>\n<p>One week and two days after Dad died.<\/p>\n<p>In that short time, my life had become almost unrecognizable.<\/p>\n<p>Yet one thing felt clearer than it had before his death.<\/p>\n<p>I knew where I stood.<\/p>\n<p>Not beside Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Not against him.<\/p>\n<p>Beside the truth.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I found one final envelope tucked behind a row of manuals in Dad\u2019s study.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared on the front.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single page.<\/p>\n<p>The date was two days before he died.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had written only a few paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p>He said if I was reading it, then events had probably moved faster than he hoped.<\/p>\n<p>He apologized.<\/p>\n<p>Not for the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Not for protecting the inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>For waiting too long to tell me what he knew.<\/p>\n<p>I read that sentence again.<\/p>\n<p>Dad wrote that he had mistaken silence for patience and patience for protection.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the line that made me cry.<\/p>\n<p>Peanut, I taught you to trust your judgment and then spent years withholding information you needed to use it. That was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the page against my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had known.<\/p>\n<p>He had reached the same conclusion I had.<\/p>\n<p>Protection without truth had failed all of us.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, he wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Do not correct my mistake by making the opposite one. Truth is not revenge.
