tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne property appears to have been purchased partly with funds originating from your mother\u2019s account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately thirty-eight thousand dollars can be traced with reasonable confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo part of North Vale belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegally, that question requires counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially, your money appears to have contributed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the envelope containing Dad\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had not simply lost all of Mom\u2019s money.<\/p>\n<p>Some of it had survived.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden inside assets he never told me existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nina gave me an address.<\/p>\n<p>I typed it into a map.<\/p>\n<p>A small commercial strip across town.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it too.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had driven me past it once.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago.<\/p>\n<p>He had pointed out the building and said Eric had made a brilliant purchase.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered laughing and asking why Mark never found deals like that.<\/p>\n<p>He had said:<\/p>\n<p>Some people are just lucky.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the map.<\/p>\n<p>Luck.<\/p>\n<p>Another word that had covered something else.<\/p>\n<p>At Samuel\u2019s what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Ridgeway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd North Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have North Vale records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I knew they would do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark and Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked down at her untouched coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cRidgeway didn\u2019t collapse because the investments were all bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney was removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my pulse in my throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t give you an exact total.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of thousands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom outside investors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot like Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t put money in his pocket and disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe let Eric move it into other projects because Mark believed those projects would pay enough to cover Ridgeway\u2019s losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pattern again.<\/p>\n<p>Chasing the rescue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark know my money was being moved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know I hadn\u2019t approved it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat back.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen things started falling apart, I told Mark to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped him hide it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause by then I was sleeping with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no point pretending that did not hurt.<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was leaving you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas payments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe settlement was Mark\u2019s idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says you threatened him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith exposure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that part is true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first? Protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe blamed me for keeping records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he dangerous?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially, yes. Personally, I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Mark offer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA confidentiality agreement, legal fees, and monthly payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you accept six years of payments instead of one settlement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t trust him to pay a lump sum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That almost made sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy continue after all this time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the agreement runs seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>That matched the records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat information were you forbidden to disclose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything about Ridgeway and North Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth Vale existed before the settlement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn paper, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Mark knew North Vale was coming while Ridgeway was collapsing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t just make the same mistake later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe planned the next company before the first one was finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction mattered enormously.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined Mark as a man repeatedly failing and improvising.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was describing something more deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>A rollover.<\/p>\n<p>A continuation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did North Vale receive from Ridgeway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo property interests and cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much cash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout one hundred twenty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid any of that come from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mark know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Dad think you had proof of accounts he couldn\u2019t find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She set the cup down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spoke to my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me that,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat North Vale existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Mark had a beneficial interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then reached into her bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave him this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She placed a flash drive on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter told me he would keep it somewhere safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you still have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccounts. Emails. Ownership schedules.
