do not have a home-equity line.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No.”

“According to the county and lender records, one was opened four years ago.”

“How much?”

“One hundred fifty thousand maximum.”

My mouth went dry.

“How much was drawn?”

“Approximately one hundred twelve thousand at peak.”

I could barely speak.

“My signature?”

“I haven’t reviewed the original closing packet.”

“Was I listed?”

“Yes.”

“How could I not know about a line of credit against my own house?”

“That is something you need to ask the lender.”

I ended the call twenty minutes later with pages of notes and no sense of where the floor was anymore.

Then I called the bank.

After identity checks and transfers between departments, a representative confirmed the account.

Home-equity line.

Opened four years earlier.

Balance: $96,842.

I pressed the phone against my ear.

“Ninety-six thousand dollars?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Who has been making the payments?”

“Payments are drawn from the joint checking account ending in 4407.”

I knew that account.

Mark handled most recurring bills.

I reviewed statements occasionally.

Apparently not closely enough.

“Can you send me the original documents?”

“Yes.”

The email arrived minutes later.

I opened the PDF.

There was my name.

My address.

My information.

And a signature.

Clare Ellison.

I stared at it.

It looked like mine.

Almost.

The shape was right.

The slope was right.

But I knew my own hand.

The capital C was wrong.

My signature had been copied.

Not perfectly.

But deliberately.

For the first time, I felt afraid of what Mark had done.

Not physically afraid.

Financially.

Legally.

Existentially.

This was no longer merely omission.

Someone had signed my name.

My phone rang.

Melissa.

I almost ignored it.

Then I remembered Nina’s twenty-five-thousand-dollar transfer.

I answered.

“Clare?”

“Yes.”

Her voice sounded strained.

“Can we talk?”

“About what?”

“Mark.”

My pulse quickened.

“What about him?”

“I think I need to tell you something.”

I looked at the forged signature on my laptop screen.

“How long have you known about Ridgeway?”

Silence.

Then Melissa said something I had not expected.

“I didn’t know that name until yesterday.”

“Yesterday?”

“Mark called me after you confronted him.”

I stood.

“What did he ask?”

Her voice dropped.

“He wanted me to tell you that the money I gave him was for the bakery.”

I stared at the screen.

“Was it?”

“No.”

That single word opened yet another door.

“What was it for?”

Melissa began to cry.

“I don’t know exactly.”

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

“He said if I didn’t help him, you could lose your house.”

I looked again at the home-equity statement.

The balance.

The forged signature.

“When was this?”

“Four years ago.”

The same year the line was opened.

“What did he tell you?”

“That he had made a terrible mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He wouldn’t say.”

“And you gave him twenty-five thousand?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he said it was the only way to keep you from finding out.”

I closed my eyes.

“Melissa.”

“I know.”

“No. Tell me the exact words.”

She breathed shakily.

“He said, ‘If Clare finds out what I did, my marriage is over.’”

I looked at the signature bearing my name.

Then Melissa added:

“And yesterday he told me the same thing again.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Forged Signature Changed Everything, and By Sunday Morning I Had to
