He was my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou assumed that if Dad died, his loans to you would effectively become mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed we\u2019d handle them together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou assumed I would forgive them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hoped you would understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you quit because you thought the estate meant you would never have to pay Dad back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat percentage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much of your decision came from believing Dad\u2019s money would absorb all of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalf?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>At midnight, Samuel emailed one final file.<\/p>\n<p>A letter from Dad to himself, never sent.<\/p>\n<p>It described his last major conversation with Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had told him the trust would prevent anyone\u2014including a spouse\u2014from controlling my inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dad\u2019s notes, Mark had become angry.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>But enough that Dad wrote down one sentence Mark had said.<\/p>\n<p>Then what exactly am I supposed to do with all the money I owe you?<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s answer was written beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Pay it back.<\/p>\n<p>A second note followed.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had asked whether Dad really intended to make his daughter\u2019s husband repay debts after his death.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had responded yes.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the page, one line was underlined.<\/p>\n<p>He still thinks my death solves his problem.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>For a long time I sat alone in the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>At one in the morning, headlights swept across the front windows.<\/p>\n<p>A car stopped outside.<\/p>\n<p>The engine shut off.<\/p>\n<p>I rose.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps crossed the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Not once.<\/p>\n<p>Three times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remained still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>His hand touched the doorknob.<\/p>\n<p>Locked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare, I know you\u2019re in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>He knocked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to explain Ridgeway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice carried through the door.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned close enough that I heard him clearly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else you don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the banister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, he said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father wasn\u2019t the only person I borrowed from.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26624\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Mark\u2019s Midnight Confession Revealed Another Creditor, but the Name He Gave Me Connected His Secrets to Someone I Never Expected<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not understand Samuel\u2019s sentence the first time. \u201cMoney that belonged to me?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d \u201cWhat money?\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s more complicated.\u201d I stood beside Dad\u2019s kitchen table with the journal open &hellip;
