That would have pleased him. Walter Hail hated speeches that made ordinary people sound like saints.

Carlos, one of Dad’s longest-serving employees, spoke next.

He described arriving for his first day twenty-six years earlier with no tools, no money, and shoes held together with tape.

Dad had looked at the shoes and said nothing.

The next morning a new pair of work boots appeared beside Carlos’s locker.

No note.

No explanation.

Carlos paused at the lectern until he could speak again.

“That was Walter,” he said. “If he automatically.

Thank you for coming.

Yes, it happened quickly.

No, he wasn’t in pain long.

Yes, I’ll call.

Yes, I promise.

At some point will.”

“Good.”

I walked into the kitchen and put the tray down.

Mark followed.

“You didn’t have to embarrass her.”

“I I went upstairs to Dad’s study.

The room smelled of paper, dust, and the peppermint candies he kept in his desk.

I sat in his chair.

On the wall was a framed photograph from Hail Mechanical’s twentieth anniversary.

Dad stood in the center surrounded by employees.

Mark was in the photograph too.

I had forgotten that.

He had still.

It was subtle.

If I had not been watching him, I might have missed it.

“Why would you ask that?”

“Carlos said Dad helped people without you?”

Mark crossed his arms.

“Your dad helped everybody.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He looked toward the photograph.

Then back at me.

“Nothing important.”

My pulse changed.

“How much?”

“Clare, today is not the day.”

“Then say no.”

He rubbed his jaw.

“I’m not doing this at your father’s funeral.”

That was not a denial.

Before I could continue, my phone vibrated.

Samuel.

I answered.

He wanted to make sure I still planned to come at ten.

“Yes.”

“And alone?”

I looked at Mark.

“Yes.”

Samuel paused.

“Walter told me something the last time we met.”

My throat tightened.

“What?”

“He said you had a habit of assuming the best of people you loved.”

Despite everything, I smiled faintly.

“That sounds like Dad.”

“At the time I told him that wasn’t exactly a character flaw.”

“What did he say?”

Samuel’s voice softened.

“He said, ‘It is if Clare confuses love with permission.’”

I looked at Mark.

He was watching me closely.

At the time, I did not know precisely what Dad had meant.

But the words stayed with me all night.

Saturday morning, I came downstairs at nine fifteen.

Mark was waiting in the kitchen wearing a dark suit.

His shoes were polished.

A leather portfolio sat beside him.

I stopped.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting ready.”

“For what?”

He looked genuinely puzzled.

“The
