us.<\/p>\n<p>It required room to choose despite their feelings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to miss you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll visit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou say that that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>We let the uncertainty stand.<\/p>\n<p>At her farewell gathering, the archive staff gave her a framed reproduction of an old preference.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise it was only approval.<\/p>\n<p>The following year she returned for Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>She looked exactly like herself and slightly unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>New haircut.<\/p>\n<p>New stories.<\/p>\n<p>New confidence.<\/p>\n<p>She brought an exhibition catalog from her museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Her name appeared among to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s in writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you want it so much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned it.<\/p>\n<p>ASK.<\/p>\n<p>VERIFY.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it reminds me you learned to let me leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not what it says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And there was the final proof that objects did not obey the meanings we assigned them.<\/p>\n<p>The key meant one thing to me.<\/p>\n<p>Another to her.<\/p>\n<p>Both could be true.<\/p>\n<p>I closed her hand around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>I was not finished
