That doesn\u2019t mean you should solve it for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>My instinct to make instructions perfect enough to eliminate difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Death would create difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>Objects would create disagreement.<\/p>\n<p>People would make choices they later questioned.<\/p>\n<p>No document could prevent all regret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo leave it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She folded the letter carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cYou know I\u2019m keeping the recipe box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd probably your kitchen table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems inconvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine is ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrong inheritance reasoning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation should have ended there.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she asked, \u201cWhat do you want us to do with your ashes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat escalated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou started it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe grocery store started it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had made legal arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Cremation.<\/p>\n<p>No elaborate service.<\/p>\n<p>But I had left the ashes question vague.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever is easiest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause then we\u2019ll argue about what you would have wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You said whatever is easiest. That sounds like you avoiding preference because you\u2019re afraid preference becomes control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>She had become intolerably perceptive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think I should say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you actually want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was harder.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the archive.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Larkspur.<\/p>\n<p>Not mine.<\/p>\n<p>The old company land.<\/p>\n<p>Absolutely not.<\/p>\n<p>Then I pictured the coast.<\/p>\n<p>The trip where I had refused the museum and sat watching waves instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich beach?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen write that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould that obligate you to travel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are allowed to do inconvenient things because we love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence reached somewhere tender.<\/p>\n<p>My family\u2019s history had trained me to distrust burdens created in the name of love.<\/p>\n<p>But not every burden was coercion.<\/p>\n<p>Some were chosen.<\/p>\n<p>Some were gifts people wanted to carry.<\/p>\n<p>The ethical line was not inconvenience.<\/p>\n<p>It was whether refusal remained possible.<\/p>\n<p>I took a pen.<\/p>\n<p>Preferred, if practical: the coast. If not, choose somewhere you like.
