request arrived over breakfast.

She had come by early carrying coffee and the expression she wore whenever she had already decided something and wanted me to believe discussion remained you.”

I sighed.

“What is the topic?”

“Intergenerational control through recordkeeping.”

I stared at her.

“You chose our it.”

“That’s why I’m asking.”

The part of me that once supervised everything woke immediately.

What records?

Which period?

Whose letters?

How would she describe Grandpa?

Would Alan agree?

What about Pam?

Would Thomas object to the Charles material?

Would Rebecca think Martin was being reduced to an example again?

Questions multiplied.

I recognized the pattern.

Control disguised as concern.

“Have you spoken to your advisor?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That I need to treat the archive like any other collection.”

Good advisor.

“And conflicts?”

“I disclose my relationship.”

“Living relatives?”

“Public materials only unless I get separate questions.”

That answer worried me and pleased me simultaneously.

“What questions?”

She opened a notebook.

I almost laughed.

Of course she had prepared.

She was interested in how documents themselves become instruments of authority.

How Grandpa used external records to resist internal manipulation.

How other relatives used paperwork to create false legitimacy.

How the foundation later had to prevent its own documentation practices from becoming paternalistic.

“That last part was Sofia’s fault.”

“She’s in the thesis.”

“Excellent.”

My granddaughter continued.

She did not want to write a family history.

She wanted to examine systems.

Who controls access.

Who defines authenticity.

Who gets treated as competent.

Who decides when records become answer immediately.

“Nothing?”

“I may interview you later if you consent.”

“I see.”

“You’re making that hands.

“What does it look like?”

“Like you’re deciding whether my methodology deserves to live.”

I laughed.

Then said the hardest thing.

“Use the archive.”

She smiled.

“With no special access.”

“Good.”

“No pre-reading.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“You don’t get to review my argument before submission unless my advisor approves it as part of the process.”

“That seems excessive.”

“It seems necessary.”

I hated how much I agreed.

“Fine.”

“And if I interview you, you’re a source, not an editor.”

“Now you’re enjoying this.”

“A little.”

She was.

The project took two years.

During that time, I learned more about restraint than I had during any board term.

She visited the archive and did not tell me which boxes she requested.

I did not ask Mei.

This required active effort.

Once I almost texted her.

Then deleted the message.

Another day, Alan called.

“Do you know what she’s reading?”

“No.”

“You haven’t asked?”

“No.”

“What if she finds something embarrassing?”

“Then I assume the archive survived.”

He groaned.

“I liked you better controlling.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“True.”

Pam reacted differently.

“She interviewed me.”

“What did you say?”

“I’m not telling you.”

I stared.

Pam smiled triumphantly.

“Look at us respecting process.”

I disliked everyone.

My granddaughter eventually requested an interview with me.

She sent formal questions beforehand.

I appreciated that.

The first ones were straightforward.

What did I understand a record to be before finding the bonds?

How did that change?

When did I first recognize that documentation could harm as well as protect?

How did I interpret Grandpa’s use of external institutions?

Then she asked:

At what point did you begin using documentation as a way to stabilize your own authority?

I stared at her.

“What kind of question is that?”

“A good one.”

“You wrote this to your grandmother.”

“You agreed to the interview.”

“I regret literacy.”

She waited.

I thought.

The honest answer was early.

Once the bonds were copied, banked, indexed, and legally reviewed, I felt safer.

Then safer became more certain.

Then certainty sometimes became authority.

I knew where the records were.

I knew which lawyer to call.

I understood the chronology.

Other relatives did not.

That asymmetry gave me power.

“Did you like it?” she asked.

I frowned.

“What?”

“Having the power.”

I almost said no.

That would have been false.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Why?”

“Because I had spent years without it.”

“Did that make it safer?”

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

“For everyone else?”

I paused.

“Not always.”

She wrote something.

I hated that.

“What are you writing?”

“I’m interviewing you.”

“You could maintain eye contact.”

“That’s not how notes work.”

I laughed.

The conversation became harder.

She asked whether the foundation’s early procedures reflected my trauma.

I would once have rejected the word.

Now I answered carefully.

“Yes.”

“Was that wrong?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Experience can reveal risk.”

“When does it become a problem?”

“When experience credit.”

“No.”

Unreasonable child.

Then she asked about Grandpa.

“Do you think he understood the power he created by scattering records across institutions?”

“Yes.”

“Do you think he trusted institutions more than people?”

“Eventually.”

“Was he right?”

Sometimes.

The answer rose automatically.

I stopped.

“Partly.”

She waited.

“Institutions helped preserve evidence.”

“And?”

“They also hid things behind procedure. Banks held letters I didn’t know to request. Trusts followed instructions written by dead people. Documentation protected rights and delayed access.”

“Could Grandpa have achieved the same protection with direct disclosure?”

“Not always.”

“Could he have done more direct disclosure?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

Her final question surprised me.

“Do you think your family would have changed without the archive?”

I looked toward the window.

Alan.

Pam.

Dale.

Me.

Robert before he died.

All of us had learned partly because records prevented convenient forgetting.

But change also required choices after the records appeared.

“The archive made denial harder.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“I know.”

I thought longer.

“Yes.
