She said it was your choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe password to the old application email, plus the safe-deposit inventory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original paperwork showing that you were supposed to be added to the deed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the safe-deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Seven years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think because I knew what I had done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was better.<\/p>\n<p>He slid a photocopy across the table.<\/p>\n<p>The document had my name.<\/p>\n<p>Laurel Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Prepared as an ownership addition after closing.<\/p>\n<p>Never filed.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers shook slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever intend to file it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already told me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter he died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>That question had been waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Walter had been dead three years.<\/p>\n<p>Grant could no longer blame his father for the entire seven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you fix it after he died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause by then the debt had started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood before he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were added to the deed, I might see what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer landed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo keeping me off the house became useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no softer version.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s eyes filled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I folded the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked shocked by the politeness.<\/p>\n<p>I was too tired for drama.<\/p>\n<p>At the parking lot, we walked toward separate cars.<\/p>\n<p>Grant stopped several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaurel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to ask you to forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to ask when I can come home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to keep doing what I\u2019m supposed to do whether you stay or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the only version of changing that would mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then we drove away separately.<\/p>\n<p>At a red light, I looked at the old deed paperwork on the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>For seven years, Grant had held a document showing exactly what he had promised our life would be.<\/p>\n<p>Shared.<\/p>\n<p>He had kept the paper.<\/p>\n<p>And withheld the reality.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26468\">Click here to continue reading: PART 19: Laurel Finally Saw the House Papers Grant Had Hidden for Seven Years, but the Decision They Forced Was About More Than Ownership<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I agreed to see Grant on Saturday.
