Neither party sells or moves major assets without written agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuspiciously reasonable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn laughed lightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Lawyers are capable of reasonable things occasionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant has agreed to freeze all discretionary investment activity and provide monthly statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he proposes that all repayments to family or third parties be reviewed before payment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of mixed funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also offered to sign an agreement acknowledging the thirteen thousand he obtained from your savings through false representations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wording hit me.<\/p>\n<p>False representations.<\/p>\n<p>No euphemism.<\/p>\n<p>No emergency.<\/p>\n<p>No misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was his idea?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to his lawyer, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that matter legally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmotionally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is outside my billing rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, I looked through Grant\u2019s handwritten timeline.<\/p>\n<p>For once, I allowed myself to read his version.<\/p>\n<p>It began with the BMW.<\/p>\n<p>I bought it because I wanted to look like someone doing better than I was.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence was plain.<\/p>\n<p>He described the loss.<\/p>\n<p>Then the credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>Then borrowing from Denise.<\/p>\n<p>Then the false mortgage emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Lang.<\/p>\n<p>Then Caroline.<\/p>\n<p>The casino.<\/p>\n<p>The home-equity line.<\/p>\n<p>The forged application.<\/p>\n<p>Each entry included a short explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Not justification.<\/p>\n<p>Explanation.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the first page, Grant had written:<\/p>\n<p>Most of my decisions came from the same fear: that if people knew what I had actually done, they would stop respecting me.<\/p>\n<p>On the next line:<\/p>\n<p>So I kept doing things that made me less worthy of respect.<\/p>\n<p>I sat with that for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Then I turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>There was a heading.<\/p>\n<p>LAUREL.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath:<\/p>\n<p>The worst part is not the money.
