I\u2019m done accepting your judgment about what I need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re acting like I committed a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That unsettled him.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years soothing Grant whenever a conversation became uncomfortable. I\u2019m not doing anything. Forget I asked.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers went numb.<\/p>\n<p>I handed the phone back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was having a bad month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork was awful. We were fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven months earlier, I had been overwhelmed with holiday orders. Grant wanted me to attend a three-day trip with some of his coworkers.
