post because he deserved to know she was alive.

Mara looked at me.

“That was Laura.”

Yes.

The anonymous photograph that led Daniel to search again.

Laura had sent it.

Bennett continued.

I did not send Richard one.

I do not trust him not to interfere.

I understood.

Laura had watched Richard make choices.

She feared another one.

Then:

If I survive tonight, I will tell him.

If I do not, the photograph is in the red envelope.

Owen searched the folder.

Red envelope.

Inside was the photograph.

Me at twenty-four.

Outside community college.

My first husband waiting beside his old car.

On the back, Laura had written:

She looks tired, but she laughs with him.

Let her have this.

I pressed my fingers against my lips.

There were tears in Mara’s eyes.

Bennett finished.

Tonight I am meeting Samuel because he says Elias will stop watching Anna if I surrender Gerald’s copied records.

I do not believe him.

But I am going because the surveillance has started again.

If I am wrong, I am sorry.

If I am right, I hope someone eventually stops protecting Anna by leaving her ignorant.

Owen closed his eyes.

The final line was for him.

My boy, none of this belongs to you unless you choose it.

You are not responsible for your father, my mistakes, or the secrets I kept.

Live your own life.

Owen cried.

Not loudly.

Bennett put a hand over his.

This time Owen did not pull away.

I stared at Laura’s photograph of me.

She had been one of the invisible adults around my life.

Watching.

Choosing.

Regretting.

But in her last letter, she had understood the central failure.

Ignorance was not safety.

Not forever.

Harris’s phone rang.

He stepped out.

Returned two minutes later.

“Elias wants to make a statement.”

Owen wiped his face.

“Why?”

“He learned we found Samuel’s pit.”

Claire, who had joined us, gave a bitter laugh.

“He knows Samuel kept leverage.”

“What does Elias want?”

“A deal.”

“Of course.”

“For information.”

“About what?”

Harris looked directly at me.

“He says Richard’s restitution list is incomplete.”

My stomach tightened.

“How incomplete?”

“Elias claims there are six people Richard never identified.”

“Victims?”

“Yes.”

“Alive?”

“He says four are.”

The room changed.

Four living people.

Four lives still unresolved.

“What does he want in return?”

“Protection and reduced charges.”

I stared toward the window.

Richard had spent his last years trying to find everyone harmed by the network.

He died believing seventeen names were all he could recover.

Elias was now claiming there were more.

Maybe true.

Maybe leverage.

Maybe both.

“What are the names?”

“He won’t give them until federal prosecutors respond.”

Owen looked at me.

“That’s what he does.”

“Yes.”

“Turns people into bargaining chips.”

“Yes.”

I thought of my own childhood.

A child inside a problem.

Claire’s words.

Now six more names sat inside another negotiation.

I looked at Harris.

“Tell federal prosecutors to do whatever gets the names verified.”

“You understand that may mean concessions.”

“I understand the victims matter more than my satisfaction.”

Harris nodded.

Claire stared at me.

“What?”

“Richard would have said the same.”

The comparison did not anger me this time.

“Maybe.”

Then Harris added, “Elias gave one name already as proof.”

“Who?”

He read it.

“Sophie Hale.”

Mara went completely still.

I turned.

“What?”

Her face had gone white.

“No.”

“Who is Sophie?”

Mara’s hands began trembling.

“My daughter.”

The room disappeared beneath me.

“What?”

She looked at me with terror.

“Your sister.”

<a
