He said Richard was not to hear it unless Daniel failed to return.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard never heard it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel appears to have hidden it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why label it for Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris corrected me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again.<\/p>\n<p>The note said Richard was not to hear it unless Daniel failed to return.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had failed to return.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had still hidden it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s letter had already admitted fear delayed Laura\u2019s truth for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is on the tape?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We went to an evidence room.<\/p>\n<p>Harris used a digital transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice began.<\/p>\n<p>Richard, if Samuel gives you this, then I was right about Elias.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>If Anna ever hears it, then you waited too long.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>I met Walter today.<\/p>\n<p>I made the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>He thinks I surrendered any claim to Anna.<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>I surrendered my right to interfere with her life.<\/p>\n<p>That is different.<\/p>\n<p>Mara closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice sounded tired.<\/p>\n<p>Anna is pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>She has a man who looks at her like she matters.<\/p>\n<p>I watched them buy groceries.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence almost broke me.<\/p>\n<p>Such an ordinary thing.<\/p>\n<p>My first husband and me carrying paper bags.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel watching from somewhere across the street.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to walk over.<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that was cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe mercy.<\/p>\n<p>I no longer trust myself to know.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>But Walter is not the only reason I stayed away.<\/p>\n<p>Richard, there is someone close to you feeding Elias information.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>Not Claire.<\/p>\n<p>Not Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Not Laura.<\/p>\n<p>Someone inside your household.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s household.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Before I ever lived there.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said:<\/p>\n<p>I saw the same car near Anna\u2019s apartment that I saw outside your estate.<\/p>\n<p>If I am wrong, burn this.<\/p>\n<p>If I am right, do not tell anyone until you know who it is.<\/p>\n<p>A rustle.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>The plate belongs to Whitmore Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s own company.<\/p>\n<p>Mara whispered, \u201cWho had access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Richard\u2019s staff.<\/p>\n<p>His business partners.<\/p>\n<p>People whose names had barely appeared because we had been staring at Walter, Elias, Claire, Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>There is one person I suspect.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel named him.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald Price\u2019s son-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s brother.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had apparently raised Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>His face had gone white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Charles knows more about Anna than he has ever admitted.<\/p>\n<p>And I think he is the reason Richard keeps losing her.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26248\">Click here to continue reading: PART 23: Daniel\u2019s Last Recording Accused Bennett\u2019s Father of Feeding Elias Information, Forcing Bennett to Reopen the Family History He Had Trusted Completely<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We waited until morning for the envelope.
