Tell her every year I stayed away I believed I was protecting the life she had built.<\/p>\n<p>There was an address at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett photographed it.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas called a contact.<\/p>\n<p>The property had changed owners twelve years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>No forwarding address.<\/p>\n<p>My hope dimmed.<\/p>\n<p>Then June said, \u201cThere was another letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>The same period Richard confronted Claire.<\/p>\n<p>The same period Claire learned everything.<\/p>\n<p>June handed me a newer envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside:<\/p>\n<p>June,<\/p>\n<p>Richard found me.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>He wants me to meet Anna.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot decide whether he has finally become brave or merely old enough to fear dying with the truth.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like someone who had known Richard well.<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>I asked for proof Anna wants to know me. Richard could not give it because he still had not told her I exist.<\/p>\n<p>So I refused.<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had been alive three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had found her.<\/p>\n<p>And still he had not told me.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a post office box.<\/p>\n<p>No town.<\/p>\n<p>Only a coded regional number.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett searched it.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhnom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped, corrected himself after checking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPine Hollow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A town less than ninety minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat close?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe go now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>June caught my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe changed her name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>June looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara Ellis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove to Pine Hollow.<\/p>\n<p>The post office box still existed.<\/p>\n<p>Active.<\/p>\n<p>Police obtained an emergency contact address after Bennett explained the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>A small cottage stood at the edge of town.<\/p>\n<p>Blue door.<\/p>\n<p>Wind chimes.<\/p>\n<p>Garden dormant for winter.<\/p>\n<p>No car.<\/p>\n<p>I walked to the porch alone.<\/p>\n<p>Knocked.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett checked the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooks lived in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas walked around the side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack door\u2019s open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police entered first.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Kitchen warm.<\/p>\n<p>Tea in the sink.<\/p>\n<p>Bed unmade.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had left recently.<\/p>\n<p>On the refrigerator hung photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Flowers.<\/p>\n<p>A dog.<\/p>\n<p>Then one photograph stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Emily.<\/p>\n<p>At a school concert.<\/p>\n<p>Taken from the back of the auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>My knees almost failed.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>Me leaving a grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>Richard and me walking in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Mara had been watching.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Watching me.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Richard had.<\/p>\n<p>A note lay on the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>ANNA.<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook opening it.<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, Richard is dead or finally told you enough to find me.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>I have rehearsed meeting you thousands of times. In every version, I explain myself perfectly. In none of them do I deserve forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Tears blurred the words.<\/p>\n<p>Richard contacted me three years ago. I refused to see you until he told you the full truth. He kept delaying.<\/p>\n<p>I hated him for that.<\/p>\n<p>I also understood him more than I wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>He believed love meant taking danger onto himself and making choices for everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>So did I.<\/p>\n<p>That is the mistake that cost us thirty years.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the letter to the table.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph was shorter.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone else has found you first, especially anyone asking about the Dawson trust, do not trust them until you know what the account truly contains.<\/p>\n<p>Not what it is worth.<\/p>\n<p>What it records.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>He whispered, \u201cTransactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat transactions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old business moved more than stolen parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hoping I was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word chilled the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUndocumented workers. Runaways.
