Mostly old farm properties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the reverse, Richard had written another line.<\/p>\n<p>If Anna must leave, take the north road, never the highway.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did have an emergency plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire grabbed her coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett still looked uneasy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe caller knew Richard warned her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means someone knows the contents of his letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr guessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was specific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho besides you had access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard. My mother was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We searched harder.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the wardrobe, I found scratch marks near the baseboard.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed.<\/p>\n<p>A narrow panel opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a metal lockbox.<\/p>\n<p>The black key worked again.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had designed everything to lead me forward one locked door at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the box lay cassette tapes.<\/p>\n<p>Old ones.<\/p>\n<p>Each labeled in handwriting I did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret \u2014 July 18.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret \u2014 July 29.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel \u2014 August 4.<\/p>\n<p>Claire \u2014 August 6.<\/p>\n<p>One tape bore only my name.<\/p>\n<p>Anna.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett found an old cassette player in the desk.<\/p>\n<p>We inserted the first tape.<\/p>\n<p>Static filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>Then a woman\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>I knew before she identified herself.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I remembered clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Because my body did.<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Richard is recording this, it means he believes we need proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily climbed beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n<p>My mother continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter came to the house last night. He wants Anna. Not because he loves her. Because he knows my family will pay him to disappear if he threatens custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The tape crackled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows I\u2019m sick. He thinks that makes me weak. Daniel wants me to go to the police, but Walter has friends. People who owe him. Claire still thinks he can be reasoned with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret said something that changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI no longer trust Claire with information about the guardianship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe repeats things without understanding the danger. Thomas warned me Walter is preparing to leave town. I don\u2019t know whether Thomas is helping him or trying to stop him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another crackle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something happens to me, Richard promised he will protect Anna until Daniel can take her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the machine.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had promised my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Her.<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Emily squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>We played the second tape.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret sounded weaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows about the hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter knows. Someone told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I die before this is resolved, Daniel must take Anna. Richard knows where the papers are.
