She had attended meetings, collected paperwork, and knew when Daniel intended to file for guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>Then, immediately before my mother died, Claire disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she betrayed her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard thought she mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph had been clipped to it.<\/p>\n<p>The picture was much newer than the others.<\/p>\n<p>Richard stood in our garden.<\/p>\n<p>Beside him was a woman in her late fifties.<\/p>\n<p>My breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I knew her.<\/p>\n<p>Not well.<\/p>\n<p>But I absolutely knew her.<\/p>\n<p>She had attended Richard\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>She had hugged me beside his grave.<\/p>\n<p>She had looked Emily directly in the face.<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Claire.<\/p>\n<p>I sank into the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was here yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett took the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe spoke to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me Richard had been lucky to have us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled as I remembered the woman\u2019s hands around mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked whether Emily and I planned to stay in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett looked toward the locked door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought harder.<\/p>\n<p>Then another memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had glanced toward the second-floor windows before leaving.<\/p>\n<p>At the time I assumed she was remembering Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood which side of the house she had been studying.<\/p>\n<p>The secret room.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>A final sheet remained beneath the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It was Richard\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Only two sentences.<\/p>\n<p>Claire knows I found Anna.<\/p>\n<p>She does not know Anna is my wife.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe note must be old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I checked the date.<\/p>\n<p>Five years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Two months before Richard proposed.<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had known Claire was connected to my past before he married me.<\/p>\n<p>And he had deliberately kept my identity from her.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed a second notation squeezed into the bottom margin.<\/p>\n<p>Written much later.<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>CLAIRE KNOWS NOW.<\/p>\n<p>Below it, Richard had added one final warning.<\/p>\n<p>If she ever comes asking about the room, do not let her inside.<\/p>\n<p>At that exact moment, the doorbell rang downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>An unknown number had sent a message.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Anna, this is Claire. I\u2019m sorry to arrive without warning, but there is something Richard never told you about your mother.
