Death had given me permission, but my body had not caught up with that fact.

I pushed.

The hinges gave a low groan.

The room beyond was dark.

A stale smell drifted out—paper, wood, dust, something faintly metallic. I reached along the wall until my fingers found a switch.

The ceiling light flickered.

Then the room appeared.

I stopped in the doorway.

Photographs covered one wall.

Not family photographs.

Surveillance photographs.

At least that was what they looked like at first.

There were pictures of apartment buildings, schools, foster homes, streets, playgrounds, and people entering or leaving unfamiliar houses.

Then I saw myself.

A photograph showed me in my twenties carrying grocery bags.

Another showed me outside a hospital.

Another had been taken from across the street from the apartment where my first husband and I lived.

My skin went cold.

There were photographs of him too.

My late husband leaning over the open hood of a car.

Him holding Emily as an infant.

The three of us leaving a clinic.

I stepped farther inside.

“This can’t be real.”

My own whisper sounded intrusive.

On another wall, Richard had arranged documents in chronological order.

Photocopies of foster-care records.

School registrations.

Old addresses.

Medical forms.

Court documents.

Several pages contained blacked-out sections.

Colored tabs marked dates.

Richard had reconstructed my childhood more carefully than I remembered living it.

Anger rose through the shock.

He had known.

Every time I struggled to explain why I hated moving, he had known.

Every time I refused to throw away old boxes because having them ready made me feel safer, he had known.

Every time I woke from a nightmare and told him I could not remember which foster home it came from, he had possessed records of those homes behind a locked door.

I grabbed the edge of a desk.

“Why?”

No answer came.

Of course none came.

Richard had arranged everything so neatly and then left me alone to discover it.

On the desk sat several wooden document boxes.

The first was labeled ANNA — EARLY YEARS.

I opened it.

Inside were photographs I had never seen.

A baby wrapped in a pale blanket.

A toddler holding a stuffed rabbit.

A little girl sitting on steps beside a woman whose face had faded with age.

I lifted that photograph.

The woman was my mother.

I knew immediately.

Not because I remembered every feature.

Because I remembered her eyes.

Mine.

My knees weakened.

I sat in Richard’s desk chair.

For years, I had possessed no clear photograph of my mother. Foster-care files had given me dates and names, never a face I could hold.

Now she was looking at me from thirty years ago.

I touched the edge carefully.

“Mom?”

The word felt strange in my mouth.

I turned the picture over.

Richard had written a date and a location.

Beneath them was one line.

She never stopped asking about Anna.

I pressed my lips together.

My mother had asked about me.

That did not fit the life I understood.

I searched the box.

There were letters, but most were copies and several were incomplete. Some were addressed to county offices. Others appeared to have been returned unopened.

My mother’s name repeated across them.

Then another name began appearing.

Daniel.

I found a photograph of my mother standing beside a young man.

He had one arm around her shoulders. She looked thin but happy.

The man resembled her around the eyes.

On the back, Richard had written:

Daniel — her brother.

My uncle.

I had never known I had one.

Beneath the photograph lay correspondence showing that Daniel had tried to locate me after my mother died.

Different agencies had redirected him.

Records had been transferred.

Names had been misspelled.

One placement apparently changed counties without the correct notification being sent.

A child could disappear inside bureaucracy without technically disappearing at all.

I covered my mouth.

Someone had looked for me.

The idea hurt almost more than believing nobody had.

I stood and moved to another section.

Richard’s notes became more recent there.

My first husband.

Emily.

Me.

Dates matched important moments in our lives.

The year we married.

Emily’s birth.

My husband’s diagnosis.

His death.

My eviction notice.

My application for employment at Richard’s estate.

Beside that final item, Richard had written two words.

FOUND HER.

I backed away.

My employment had not been an accident.

The lawyer had told the truth.

Richard had found me.

But something still did not make sense.

If he had spent years searching, why wait until I applied for work?

Had he arranged that too?

I began opening drawers.

The first contained office supplies.

The second held envelopes.

The third was locked.

I tried the black key.

It did not fit.

I searched the desktop until I found a smaller brass key taped beneath the center drawer.

“Always another key,” I muttered.

It opened the drawer.

Inside was a single folder.

No label.

I placed it on the desk.

The first document concerned my mother.

A physician’s letter described a serious illness and declining prognosis.

The date was months before I entered foster care.

Another document referred to emergency guardianship.

A third mentioned concerns regarding my biological father.

My hands stopped.

Biological father.

I had been told almost nothing about him.

Depending on which social worker I asked, he had disappeared, died, or never been identified.

Richard had underlined one sentence.

Potential safety concern if paternal contact resumes.

I searched faster.

There were reports.

An old address.

A mechanic’s business.

A name had been redacted on one copy, visible on another.

Then I found a recent photograph.

A man perhaps in his sixties stood outside a repair shop.

The image had been taken only a few years earlier.

On the back, Richard had written:

Confirmed alive.

My pulse hammered.

I looked again at the photograph of my mother and Daniel.

Then at the unknown man.

The resemblance was not obvious.

Maybe I wanted it to be.

Maybe fear was inventing connections.

I returned to the desk.

Another photograph lay beneath the folder.

My mother stood beside Daniel again.

Richard himself was in the background.

Much younger.

I brought it closer.

Richard knew them.

Not merely through records.

He had actually been there.

The room tilted.

I sat down hard.

“What were you to her?”

A floorboard creaked somewhere outside.

I froze.

Emily?

I listened.

Silence.

I looked toward the open door.

“Emily?”

No response.

I stood.

Another sound came from downstairs.

The front door.

Opening.

Every muscle in my body tightened.

The lawyer had left.

No one else should have had a key.

I slipped the photograph into my pocket and moved into the hallway.

Footsteps sounded below.

Slow.

Heavy.

I hurried first to Emily’s bedroom.

She was asleep beneath her pink blanket, one hand curled around a wooden chess pawn.

Relief hit so strongly I had to steady myself against the doorframe.

Then the stairs creaked.

Someone was coming up.

I stepped into the hall and pulled Emily’s door shut behind me.

“Who’s there?”

The footsteps stopped.

My eyes searched for anything I could use as a weapon.

Richard’s old walking stick leaned against the wall.

I grabbed it.

Then a familiar voice called from below.

“Anna?”

I nearly collapsed.

The lawyer appeared at the turn of the staircase.

“What are you doing?” I hissed.

He raised both hands.

“I’m
