That ordinary detail nearly undid me. I had spent so many mornings watching him write correspondence there while complaining about his stiff fingers.<\/p>\n<p>I unfolded it.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Not Annie, the nickname he usually used.<\/p>\n<p>Anna.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed hard.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s first lines were simple. If the letter had reached me, he wrote, then he was gone, the funeral had taken place, and I was probably furious with both him and the lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Despite myself, I let out a broken laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer almost smiled. \u201cKeep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard asked me to do something before I made any decisions about the estate.<\/p>\n<p>Stay in the house.<\/p>\n<p>I reread that instruction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer shifted in his chair.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s letter warned me not to sell the property, surrender possession, or believe anyone who arrived claiming that Emily and I had to leave immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just told me the house wasn\u2019t left to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you it wasn\u2019t part of what you directly inherit through the primary estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like lawyer language designed to make normal people insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt probably is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan someone make us leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My irritation sharpened. \u201cYou know what this says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know portions of Richard\u2019s arrangements. I do not know everything he put in that letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back down.<\/p>\n<p>The next paragraph changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>Richard wrote that there had been another reason he married me, one he had never found the courage to explain while alive.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason.<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to shrink.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered our wedding day. Richard adjusting his tie twice because his hands shook. Emily scattering flower petals in completely the wrong direction. Me standing at the end of a small garden aisle wondering whether I was making the most practical decision of my life or the worst.<\/p>\n<p>I had believed our motives were obvious.<\/p>\n<p>I needed security.<\/p>\n<p>Richard was lonely.<\/p>\n<p>Affection came later.<\/p>\n<p>Love came quietly enough that neither of us ever announced when it had happened.<\/p>\n<p>But according to the letter, Richard had been carrying another reason from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>Before I had ever stepped into his house seeking employment, Richard already knew my name.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the paper.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the lawyer. \u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he investigate employees?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard wanted you to hear it from him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words came out harsher than I intended.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer absorbed them without reacting.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to the page.<\/p>\n<p>Richard knew about my late husband.<\/p>\n<p>He knew about Emily.<\/p>\n<p>He knew about the medical bills and the rent I could not pay.<\/p>\n<p>Those facts alone could have been discovered after I began working for him.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached the next sentence.<\/p>\n<p>He knew about my foster-care history before we met.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Very few people knew much about my childhood because there was very little I willingly told.<\/p>\n<p>My memories of foster care were not one continuous story. They were disconnected rooms.<\/p>\n<p>A yellow bedroom where the wallpaper peeled beside the window.<\/p>\n<p>A kitchen where I was forbidden to open the refrigerator without permission.<\/p>\n<p>A foster mother who returned my clothes in a trash bag.<\/p>\n<p>A couple who told me they might adopt me, then changed their minds.<\/p>\n<p>I learned not to ask why.<\/p>\n<p>Children who ask why are often given answers that hurt worse than silence.<\/p>\n<p>By twelve, I could pack faster than most adults.<\/p>\n<p>By fifteen, I stopped decorating bedrooms.<\/p>\n<p>By seventeen, I stopped believing anybody who used the word forever.<\/p>\n<p>My first husband had been one of the few people who understood. He never asked me to pretend my childhood had made me stronger. He knew it had simply taught me how to expect abandonment.<\/p>\n<p>Richard knew that too.<\/p>\n<p>But how?<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer\u2019s gaze dropped briefly toward the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than you realize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A knot formed beneath my ribs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything he could find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Richard\u2019s garden looked stripped and colorless beneath the winter sky. Only yesterday, people in black coats had stood along those paths after the funeral, speaking quietly about what a generous man Richard had been.<\/p>\n<p>None of them had mentioned that he had apparently researched his wife before meeting her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas I some project to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow would you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I knew him for thirty-one years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I know him at all?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I regretted the question immediately, but I did not take it back.<\/p>\n<p>From upstairs came a small thump.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Emily.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I considered putting the letter away. Whatever Richard had hidden, I could deal with it later.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered his warning not to leave the house.<\/p>\n<p>I returned to my chair.<\/p>\n<p>The next section was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Richard wrote that he had searched for me before I ever worked for him.<\/p>\n<p>I read the sentence three times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper trembled between my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would a wealthy businessman spend years looking for a foster kid he didn\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer glanced at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>I followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had answered.<\/p>\n<p>He had been searching because someone had asked him to find me.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>The word became meaningless for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Mother.<\/p>\n<p>I had been told mine died when I was three.<\/p>\n<p>What little I remembered of her might not even have been real. A woman singing near a window. A blue sleeve. The smell of soap. Sometimes memory and imagination borrow from each other until you cannot tell them apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer\u2019s reply was careful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that is what you were told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I was told?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny gesture frightened me more than any answer could have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you hiding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to follow Richard\u2019s instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am Richard\u2019s widow. Stop following his instructions and answer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother was gravely ill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. But it matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard know her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word struck like a slap.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed back from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know every detail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the legal arrangements. Richard kept portions of the history private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew my mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he never told me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five years.<\/p>\n<p>Five years of breakfast across the same table.<\/p>\n<p>Five years of birthdays and hospital visits and Christmas mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Five years during which I had told Richard things I had never told anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>He had listened while I admitted that I did not even know where my mother was buried.<\/p>\n<p>And he had said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to continue reading.<\/p>\n<p>My mother had not abandoned me.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence blurred.<\/p>\n<p>I blinked hard.<\/p>\n<p>It remained there.<\/p>\n<p>I read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>The room vanished behind tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped the letter onto the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnna\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t call me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy entire childhood was built around one fact. She left me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may not have been what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you understand what that means?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I paced toward Richard\u2019s chair and stopped beside it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen families sent me back, I thought it made sense because my own mother had done it first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my husband died, some part of me thought, of course. People leave. That\u2019s what they do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now you walk in here after Richard\u2019s funeral and tell me the first abandonment of my life might not even have been real?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you Richard found evidence that the story you were given was incomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed both hands against the back of the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what he left for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The black key remained inside the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer reached in and placed it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>It was small, old-fashioned, and heavier than it looked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the locked room upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the second-floor corridor was a door Richard had never allowed me to open.<\/p>\n<p>I had asked about it early in our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>He called it private storage.<\/p>\n<p>Later, when I teased him about keeping buried treasure inside, he told me everyone deserved one locked door.<\/p>\n<p>I had respected that.<\/p>\n<p>Because I trusted him.<\/p>\n<p>Now the memory tasted bitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard ordered me never to enter it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI genuinely don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the key.<\/p>\n<p>Cold metal pressed into my palm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted me to open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter his funeral. Not before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever he kept there concerns you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sound came from upstairs again, followed by Emily turning in bed.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes any of this put my daughter in danger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did Richard warn me not to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he expected certain people to become interested once he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot answer that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t, or you won\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost threw the key at him.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I clenched it harder.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer rose and buttoned his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re leaving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou drop this into my life and then leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely sorry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard divided his instructions into stages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed you would need time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer picked up his briefcase, walked toward the front door, then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not tell anyone what you find in that room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard was not worried about someone discovering what he had collected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand closed around the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was worried about what someone might do after realizing you had seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The door closed behind him.<\/p>\n<p>I stood alone.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, Emily slept.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the hallway waited a door I had passed hundreds of times without touching.<\/p>\n<p>I climbed the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>The black key felt heavier with every step.<\/p>\n<p>When I reached the locked room, I inserted it before I could change my mind.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism resisted.<\/p>\n<p>Then it turned.<\/p>\n<p>The lock clicked open.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever remained of the man I thought I knew waited on the other side.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=26228\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Behind Richard\u2019s Forbidden Door, I Found My Entire Life Pinned to the Walls and a Photograph That Should Not Have Existed<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I broke the seal with my thumbnail.
