relevant portion with Stephen present.

He listened without moving.

When Raymond repeated Andrew’s words—make it look natural—Daniel closed his eyes.

When Raymond described the post-crash payment through AP Logistics, Daniel whispered something I couldn’t hear.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“I should have killed him.”

Nina immediately said, “Do not say things like that.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“I don’t mean now.”

“That doesn’t improve it.”

“I mean when I found out.”

I stared at him.

“When did you find out Andrew was directly involved?”

Daniel’s face changed.

There.

Again.

A hesitation.

“Daniel.”

“Not fully.”

“When?”

“After the crash.”

“How long after?”

“A week.”

My chest tightened.

“You knew Andrew had spoken to the mechanic?”

“Not Raymond.”

“Did you know he coordinated with Evan?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“A week.”

“Did you know he paid someone?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Did you know the person physically altered the car?”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

I felt something break cleanly inside me.

“You’ve spent two days telling me you thought Richard escalated everything.”

“I believed Richard started it.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

“I didn’t know Andrew personally instructed the mechanic.”

“But you knew his chain caused the damage.”

“Yes.”

“And you kept him as your closest adviser.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he had proof I knew beforehand that something might happen.”

There it was.

Andrew’s real leverage.

Not merely Daniel’s financial crimes.

My accident.

Daniel knew enough before the crash to warn me.

He did not.

That knowledge could destroy him.

So Andrew became untouchable.

“You weren’t protecting the company,” I said.

“No.”

“Not really.”

“No.”

“You were protecting yourself from me learning you could have stopped it.”

“Yes.”

I turned away.

For the first time, Daniel did not ask me to understand.

Maybe he finally grasped that understanding had become cruel.

Nina’s phone rang.

Detective Ellison.

She had one more development.

Police had searched Raymond’s workspace.

Inside a locked cabinet they found an envelope delivered two days earlier.

No return address.

Inside was a cashier’s check.

One hundred thousand dollars.

Payable to Raymond Vale.

“What for?” I asked.

A handwritten note was attached.

After October 12, tell the truth exactly as instructed.

The handwriting was not Andrew’s.

Not Daniel’s.

Not Richard’s.

Not Patricia’s.

But there were initials.

P.L.

Peter Lawson.

The lawyer who had certified my false ownership transfer.

The man preparing fake incapacity forms.

The man scheduled to fly to Toronto.

And apparently the man paying Raymond to repeat a manufactured version of my accident after the merger vote.

<a
