Anything he can later characterize as consciousness of guilt.”

I stared at Julian’s messages.

He had repeatedly told me not to touch the accounts.

Maybe he wanted me frightened enough to do exactly that.

“He expects me to panic.”

“Yes.”

“He thinks I’m alone.”

“Yes.”

A you.”

At 3:41 a.m., she gave me the name of Marcus Bell.

Forensic accountant.

He had handled fraud cases involving trusts, corporate structures, hidden assets, and disputed signatures.

“Can he work now?”

“If I wake him.”

“Wake him.”

“I already have.”

Twenty minutes later, an encrypted email arrived.

Marcus’s instructions were painfully specific.

Do not rename files.

Do not modify originals.

Do not forward suspicious attachments through ordinary email.

Photograph physical evidence before moving it.

Preserve timestamps.

Document every communication.

I followed every instruction.

The house gradually stopped feeling like my home.

The kitchen became a location.

The bedroom became a location.

Julian’s closet became a location.

Even the bed where I had slept beside him for a decade seemed to belong to an investigation rather than a marriage.

I returned to my office.

My grandfather’s walnut desk smelled faintly of cedar when I opened the lower drawer.

Julian used to tease me about keeping paper.

Receipts.

Contracts.

Tax records.

Foundation correspondence.

Property documents.

My father had taught me that important papers should survive whatever story people later told about them.

I had considered that old-fashioned.

Tonight it felt prophetic.

Inside the black folder were months of transfers.

When I first started collecting them, I believed perhaps two hundred thousand dollars had gone missing.

Then the number approached half a million.

Then a million.

After that, I stopped adding because the total made me physically ill.

Three shell companies received repeated payments.

One was registered in Delaware.

Another in Nevada.

The third seemed to exist only as an address and a bank relationship.

Sterling Meridian Holdings connected them.

I studied its operating agreement again.

My name appeared as a minority beneficiary.

Julian’s appeared throughout the structure.

Then came the provision concerning death, disappearance, or legal incapacity.

I read it three times.

If Julian vanished under the right circumstances, control could shift in a way that made me appear far more involved than I had ever been.

I pulled out the credit applications.

My supposed signatures sat at the bottom.

Beautiful imitations.

Wrong C.

Wrong pressure.

Wrong rhythm.

I had signed enough contracts in twenty years to recognize my own hand.

Julian had counted on investigators seeing a name.

He had not counted on me examining the stroke.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

You should have left when you had the chance.

I felt the hair rise along my arms.

A second message arrived.

He won’t forgive you for what you did.

What I did.

The wording was deliberate.

Someone was already assigning me a role.

I forwarded screenshots to Eleanor.

Then I placed the phone face down.

Fear came at last.

Not the fear I had felt watching Julian pack.

This was colder.

I could suddenly see the story he intended other people to believe.

Claire Sterling had access to company money.

Claire Sterling authorized transfers.

Claire Sterling received money through hidden entities.

Claire Sterling discovered her husband’s affair.

Claire Sterling became unstable.

Perhaps Claire Sterling overdosed after Julian left.

Perhaps Julian returned someday as the grieving husband who had escaped a troubled marriage.

And perhaps millions disappeared somewhere in the confusion.

I stood and walked to the kitchen.

The sealed tea waited under the light.

If I had actually swallowed the contents, would I have awakened?

I refused to let myself answer.

At 4:12 another message arrived.

No words this time.

Only a photograph of the front of my house.

Taken recently.

Snow lay along the edge of the drive.

One upstairs window glowed faintly.

My office.

Someone knew where I was sitting.

I moved away from the window.

Eleanor called.

“Lock every door.”

“They’re locked.”

“Security is so.”

“Liam?”

“Possibly.”

“Chloe?”

“Don’t assume anything yet.”

I disliked that answer because it was sensible.

My anger wanted simple villains.

The documents were offering something messier.

At 4:27 a.m., the monitoring system refreshed.

A new transfer appeared.

$2,400,000.

I stopped breathing.

The source was one of Julian’s corporate accounts.

The destination was Sterling Meridian Holdings.

I did not touch it.

I copied the transaction reference and searched the documents Eleanor had previously helped obtain.

The destination was not Chloe.

Not Liam.

It was a private trust.

I opened the beneficiary page.

Claire Sterling.

For several seconds, I thought I had misunderstood.

Then I checked again.

My name.

The trust had been created six months earlier.

Three weeks after I discovered Julian’s affair.

“Why?” I whispered.

Then I found another document.

The answer was worse than theft.

The trust had not been built to give me money.

It had been built to make it appear that I had received stolen money.

Julian was planting millions in my name.

My forged signatures established authorization.

The shell companies established movement.

The trust established benefit.

All he needed was motive.

An angry wife.

A troubled marriage.

An affair.

He had been manufacturing my guilt while sleeping beside me.

My phone began ringing.

Julian.

I watched it stop.

Then start again.

A message appeared.

Pick up.

Another.

I know you’re awake.

My skin went cold.

He had finally understood.

A third message followed.

Whatever you think you found, you’re already too late.

I looked at the jar of tea.

At the forged signatures.

At the transfer still glowing on my laptop.

Then I looked at Chloe’s airport photograph.

My grandmother’s sapphire shone against her skin.

Julian called again.

This time I answered.

I said nothing.

Neither did he.

Five seconds passed.

Then his voice came through.

The tenderness was gone.

“You should have stayed asleep.”

I leaned back in my father’s chair.

“You should have left my grandmother’s necklace where you found it.”

Silence.

Behind him came the muffled announcement of an airport gate.

His flight had not departed.

That mattered.

“Claire,” he said, “you have no idea what you’re doing.”

“You’ve been telling me that for ten years.”

“This isn’t
