The signature on the document was flatter.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison photographed it.<\/p>\n<p>The bank would conduct its own investigation, but if Mom formally alleged forgery, the matter could move beyond an internal dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine then handed us a transaction list.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one thousand four hundred dollars had gone to Carter Strategic Ventures.<\/p>\n<p>Almost twelve thousand had gone toward Julian\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>More than eight thousand had been used for travel and hotels.<\/p>\n<p>There were restaurant bills, electronics, clothing, and payments to credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw recurring transfers labeled CONSULTING.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elaine pointed to a destination account.<\/p>\n<p>The account belonged to a woman named Vanessa Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>The transfers totaled just over fourteen thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine could not tell us.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison wrote down the name.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>We took a break.<\/p>\n<p>In the hallway, she leaned against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I mean I want to finish this and go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was determination beneath the fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>We returned.<\/p>\n<p>Mom marked every transaction she recognized.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, she had disputed more than ninety thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Some money might be recoverable.<\/p>\n<p>Some might not.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine refused to promise anything.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciated that.<\/p>\n<p>False reassurance had already caused enough damage.<\/p>\n<p>When we left the bank, Harrison received a call.<\/p>\n<p>He listened, asked two questions, then stopped beside his car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe title search is clean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian made at least two representations that he owned the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The credit application I had found was one.<\/p>\n<p>The second was more troubling.<\/p>\n<p>A private lender had received financial documents listing the house among Julian\u2019s assets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe borrowed against it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly. There\u2019s no recorded lien. But the lender appears to have considered the property when evaluating his net worth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we need to establish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told people it was his house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed from hurt to humiliation.<\/p>\n<p>I touched her arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied. That embarrassment belongs to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Harrison could respond, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe.<\/p>\n<p>I almost ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put it on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe sounded as if she had been crying all night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie, I need to talk to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Julian checks things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom and I exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChecks what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy phone. My messages. Everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my anger shift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a motel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Julian there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison silently shook his head, warning me not to disclose our location.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDocuments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand all of them. They\u2019re from his office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Khloe whispered, \u201cBecause he has cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCameras where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn his office. Maybe other places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat down on a bench.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe started crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know things were this bad, Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew enough to help take Mom\u2019s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no defense in her voice this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we were borrowing from the money you sent. Julian said once his next deal closed, we\u2019d put everything back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mom\u2019s certificates?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI swear I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the forged signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe went silent.<\/p>\n<p>That silence frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw him practicing Mom\u2019s signature once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you said nothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me it was for a birthday card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then she gave an address across town.<\/p>\n<p>Julian had rented a small office under the name of one of his companies.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe apparently had a key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can get them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. If Julian is monitoring the office, you don\u2019t walk into it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhloe, this is Harrison Cole. Do not remove anything. Do not destroy anything. Do not access a computer you aren\u2019t authorized to use. If you already possess documents lawfully available to you, preserve them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe sounded frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need your own attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not the reassurance she wanted.<\/p>\n<p>But it was the truth.<\/p>\n<p>We agreed to meet Khloe in the lobby of a busy hotel.<\/p>\n<p>She arrived wearing yesterday\u2019s clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Without Julian beside her, she seemed different.<\/p>\n<p>Not innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Just frightened.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood when she entered.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe stopped several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Neither moved.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Khloe said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe began crying.<\/p>\n<p>She did not try to hug her.<\/p>\n<p>That restraint told me she understood she no longer had the right to assume forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>We sat.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe placed a large envelope on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already had these in my car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison put on reading glasses.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photocopies of business applications, bank statements, and correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>Several pages listed the Austin property.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw a form bearing Mom\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Martha Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it was a signature.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison\u2019s expression became severe.<\/p>\n<p>The document appeared to state that Martha held an ownership interest in the property and had authorized Julian to use it as supporting collateral for a business arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was false in two different ways.<\/p>\n<p>Mom did not own the property.<\/p>\n<p>And she had not signed the authorization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d Harrison asked.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe rubbed her palms together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian asked me to make copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout four months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know what it was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see Martha sign it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison placed the document carefully back on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have the original?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Khloe looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian knows you own the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s always known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, some part of me had wondered whether Julian had convinced himself the property effectively belonged to Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe destroyed that possibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew from the beginning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why tell Mom I transferred it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe looked toward our mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he needed her to stop asking Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison asked, \u201cNeeded her to stop asking about what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe looked at Julian\u2019s copied documents spread across the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said there was a way to make it ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=25982\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Khloe\u2019s Confession Explained Why Julian Needed Our Mother Quiet and Why He Had Been Watching the House So Closely<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I slept for less than three hours.
