You will be given an opportunity to remove personal belongings peacefully. Any remaining property can be handled according to the proper process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cWhat happened before tonight was insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khloe stepped toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what we\u2019ve been dealing with. Julian\u2019s businesses failed. We had debt. We had nowhere else to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you took Mom\u2019s money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several guests exchanged looks.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harrison removed another document.<\/p>\n<p>It was only a preliminary record, but the account numbers were enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-four recurring deposits funded by Ms. Brooks entered Martha Brooks\u2019s care account,\u201d he said. \u201cFunds matching those deposits were subsequently transferred into a joint account associated with you and your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>That was the first moment I knew Harrison\u2019s information was correct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d someone whispered.<\/p>\n<p>I answered without looking away from my sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-two thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman near the dining table slowly set down her glass.<\/p>\n<p>Khloe looked at Julian.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were sending Mom that much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree thousand every month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled with something I couldn\u2019t immediately identify\u2014guilt, anger, fear, perhaps all three.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t your money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was family money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice stayed quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI earned it working sixteen-hour shifts thousands of miles from home. I missed birthdays, holidays, funerals, and six years with Mom because I believed she was safe here.
