low.

“To whom?”

Vale answered:

“To me.”

Nothing else in the recording explained Leonard Vale better.

Not science.

Not Margaret.

Not Charles.

Not the era.

Him.

He believed the information mattered to him more than consent mattered to us.

The recording continued another eleven minutes.

Most of it confirmed things we already knew.

Ridgeway.

Northbridge.

Carol.

Daniel’s investigation.

Charles secretly funding it.

Then Daniel asked one final question.

“Are there any living children connected to Susan’s material whom I have not identified?”

Michael and I both stopped breathing.

Vale took a long time.

“Define connected.”

Daniel swore.

“Children carrying substantial genetic material originating from Susan Carter.”

Vale answered.

“Four.”

I counted automatically.

Jake.

Maya.

Natalie.

Ethan.

Four.

Daniel asked, “Only four?”

“Yes.”

“No X8 birth?”

“No.”

“X9?”

“No clinical birth.”

“Any other retained eggs?”

“No.”

“Any additional embryos?”

“No.”

My eyes closed.

The accounting matched.

For the first time, Vale himself confirmed the boundary.

Four living people.

No endless line of hidden children waiting beyond another folder.

Daniel asked, “You’re certain?”

“Yes.”

Then Vale said something almost too softly to hear.

“There was one pregnancy that did not continue.”

I opened my eyes.

Daniel asked which material.

“X9-derived experimental transfer.”

My breath caught.

We had believed X9 never reached clinical use.

“Where?”

“Ridgeway.”

“Who authorized it?”

“No one properly.”

“Outcome?”

“Loss before twelve weeks.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“Did the patient know?”

“No.”

“Name?”

Vale refused.

Daniel pressed.

Vale refused again.

Then the recording ended.

I stared at the phone.

Four living people.

One lost pregnancy.

Nine eggs accounted for.

The reproductive mystery finally had edges.

But one question remained larger than all of it.

I looked at Michael.

“Charles built the program.”

“Yes.”

“Margaret used it.”

“Yes.”

“Vale corrupted it.”

“Yes.”

“And all three called some version of it family.”

Michael reached toward me.

Then stopped before touching my hand.

He waited.

I looked at the space between us.

Eighteen years.

Ten feet.

A marriage built around withheld touch and withheld truth.

This time the choice belonged to me.

I moved my hand forward.

Not far.

Just enough that my fingertips rested against his.

Michael did not grip them.

He simply stayed still.

That was all I could offer.

For now, it was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: I Met Leonard Vale Expecting a Monster, but
