Severe infection. Occasionally a complicated pregnancy or other medical event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJake\u2019s birth was uncomplicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the chart I have, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe chart you have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour older records are incomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone keeps saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Evans studied my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas someone else mentioned it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I mean you said yesterday that my 2008 hospitalization barely has any details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s correct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould this have happened then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room become smaller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the hospital because I took sleeping pills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey pumped my stomach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat treatment wouldn\u2019t normally cause what I\u2019m seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence I had somehow expected since yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what happened to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you tell how old the changes are?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot precisely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than ten?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEighteen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind supplied an image before I asked for it.<\/p>\n<p>2008.<\/p>\n<p>Michael beside the hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>My abdomen aching.<\/p>\n<p>His hand around mine.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSusan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the overdose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the lower part of my abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Evans\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you told?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat it was from having my stomach pumped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered the tablet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you receive discharge documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assume so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I wasn\u2019t exactly organized then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould your husband?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question made me look at her.<\/p>\n<p>Michael kept everything.<\/p>\n<p>Mortgage statements from 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Jake\u2019s elementary-school report cards.<\/p>\n<p>Warranty papers for appliances we no longer owned.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes of tax documents arranged by year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Evans nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the meantime, I can request records from the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter eighteen years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they were archived rather than destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly are you looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProcedure reports. Anything attached to that admission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consent forms.<\/p>\n<p>Something cold moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was unconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch of the time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. At least at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was your medical decision-maker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Evans\u2019s voice stayed calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t necessarily mean he authorized anything.
